stupid question for the winter!

I was wondering how bad would it be if I rode my bike until the snow hit the ground! I will store it in a unheated garage for the winter. I'm in Indiana it gets really cold but It might be a while before snow. I have snow suites etc... I don't care to get cold LOL!

let the bike reach operating temp before you go wild with it. let it warm up fully, as in oil is warm not just the coolant that is displayed on the gauges. feel the oil pan, dont go by the gauge is what im saying i guess. traction "may" be an issue. be careful! the bike will be making more power than in summer with the cold air. exercise extreme caution on turns when its freezing out!

Double up on the knees and hands.Wear another layer inside the helmet because the draft will freeze your head. Not only will you have less traction in the corners but stopping also.If you do get caught in black ice, ride the gutter where the sand is.Trick is to keep riding as it gets cold so your body acclimates to the weather.

Are you asking if it will hurt the bike? She'll be fine.

I have run my 12 in sub freezing temperatures, no worries man. Once it gets into the 20's or below is when it starts getting REALLY cold.

You might want to get a heated vest and heated grips. You'll be happy you did.

Other than taking longer to warm (and use 10W40 oil if not allready) the bike dosen't mine. Here in Finland I usually ride until snow comes. Also in freezeeng temperatures, but don't ride if it was wet in the evening and it got freezing in the night. You'll nevert know if it is ice or not. But if it has been dry - no worries. And also check the tyre pressures as they will get lower with lower temperatures. I do have a warm carage when living home so mornings aren't that big difference. And about You getting cold - I've found these technical underwear that uses wind stopper (http://www.windstopper.com) and have found it very good - in both riding and jogging or other cold outside activies! They're price but worth every $$$$.

And remember that it takes also longer to the tires to get to the operating temperature!

Yup! If it gets real cold I wear my Ski-Doo modular and it almost never fogs!

Until the late 90's I never stopped riding! I had to tape about 50% of the radiator (The Bottom part because even with a thermostat the colder water at the bottom of the radiator still cools the water in the engine taking a lot longer for it to get warm and if you are going fast enough and it is cold enough the engine will NEVER get to operating temp! It is always easier to remove tape than it is to find tape to put on the radiator!

Second, If I had a choice between 20 / 50 and 10 / 40 it is 10 / 40 I would not go any thicker than that! Lower your tire pressure to about 28 rear and no more than 30 to 32 front because the Cold is not going to give you traction or allow the tires to heat up. if you do not ride for periods of time make sure to use Stabil and nowadays find it for the Gas-achol to keep from gumming things up.

Last, I keep the tires that are on the ground on Thin Plywood! the cement can really get cold and take life out of the tires!

For you, get a set of heated gloves and a good wool Scarf! Wrap it over your nose and upen the visor when sitting still. Anywhere the air hits you it will do damage!
