HELP!!! PLEASE TELL ME IT'S NOT TRUE!
Just picked up my new ZX12 Saturday. Rode it 60 miles, and when I stopped, all I smelt was burning rubber. Looked at the radiator overfill - nothing! Checked it cold - nothing! Did they forget to fill it when they serviced it??? Temp gauge was pretty high, but not showing in the red. ANY IDEAS???

Probably just put some in...just not enough. If you had no coolant you wouldnt have lasted 60 miles

i had a odd smell at first, i figured that it was some sort of protective spray or cleaner or something. sure enough it either burned off or went away.

Id assume it was the new packing in the pipe burning off.
I smelled the same thing when i got mine....just more pronounced near the exhaust.

Probably not a big deal. Take the time to see how much water you have to put in the radiator to top it off. Likely less then a half of a cup. If so no big deal at all.
If the bike is really low on water or none at all the temp gauge will not read hot as it has nothing to actually read! But most likely you just selled the pieces burning in. Especially if the dealer didn't run the bike much if any prior to giving it to you.

Well, mine smelled pretty bad the first day I had it too. Most of them do, but.......
I know of one ZX12 (Wrenis's bike) that had the fairing mounted a little too far to the left and it was being burned by the exhaust.
When we figured out what was happening, we loosened the mounting bolts and pushed it over then re-tightned it. All better now.

It took about a cup and a half of water to fill it up. The dealer said they come from the factory filled, but must not have been enough. They also said the smell is from the packing in the muffler. Rode it last night & seems fine. Keeping the proverbial fingers crossed. Now I just have to wait those damn 1000 miles before I can see what this puppy can do!!!

What packing?? Is it an aftermarket exhaust? The stock muffler doesn't have any packing!

It has the stock exhaust - the dealer said there is some packing in it. I thought it only had metal baffles... It's got 100 miles on it now & the rubber smell is almost gone. Maybe there's just some sealant in the canister that needs to cure?

The temp guage will read high at first, but the longer you ride, the better it will be. Get that first 3000 miles on it quick, and you wont have the temp problem ever again.

I had the same problem just after my first rear tire wore out.

I tried to look over my shoulder to see where it was coming from but when I did the back end would swing around...

Take a stock canister and cut it apart, it has packing in it! It is a double wall construction and has a fiber type packing. Also the mid pipe has the same construction.

The reason your bike is running *hot* is because there is air trapped in the cooling system. Air expands greatly when heated and the expansion of the rubber is probably what you smell.
Just add distilled water only for now. THe factory coolant mixture is much to rich for my tastes. I think they mix it about 50/50. Your better off going with 60/40 mix. 60% water and 40% antifreeze.
You are probably also smelling the catalytic converter. Pull your stock muffler off and chisel that stuff out of there! Instant 5hp+ at redline.
So the 2002 models now have only a 1000 mile breakin? Cool!!
