Question for Doug Meyer or anyone else that can help

I have a 2000 12R, PCIIIR (Custom Map), Akro full system, K&N Filters, Muzzy Block off plates. Been running Mobile 1 MX4T synthetic since about 3000 miles without problems. Other than that, basically stock.

Please bear with my while I fumble through this explanation.

Sometimes when I get on the bike hard in first and second (ie, taking it up to about 10,000 rpms, yea I know that's not real hard but still), like when getting onto a highway, then ease up and shift on up to sixth, the fuel injection light would come on. There is no loss of power or any thing else that would indicate a problem other than the FI Light. This has happened about 4 times in the last few months.

I figure that the ECU uses the gear position sensor to help work out the fuel mapping and timing advance for each gear and I don't want to take a chance on hurting anything.

Each time I checked the ECU, I pulled a fault code 25 (Gear position switch). With this, I took it to the dealer to get the switch replaced along with the valve stem recall.

The dealer didn't have the special needle adapter set the manual says you need to mesure the gear position Switch input voltage, so he skipped that step and just pulled the switch out (braking one of the tabs that the screw goes through in the process). (Section 2-74 through 2-77 in the manual)

He said he could not get continuity between the drum and ground (he set meter to ohms and connected the negative lead to engine ground and was taking the positive lead and touching the drum). He showed me what he was doing. He called Kawasaki and they told him that sounded like a grounding problem and offered no further help.

Dealer says that there should be continuity through the drum and bearings back to the ground. He said that there is too high resistance to pass a current and that it is not passing the proper electrical signal to the sensor. If he holds the shifter up, (having it make contact with the gear forks on the inside), he gets the reading he wants.

Only thing he could think of was that possibly because I'm running Mobile 1 MX4T, it's not able to conduct a signal like it should.

I cannot believe that oil plays any part in this.

I was wondering if you have ever heard anything like this. Should there be a signal passing via the drum to this sensor? Do you think that if the procedures in the manual were followed, i.e. checking the continuity and voltage at the ECU there would be any difference, or since it's not getting continuity at the drum is there another problem that I need to address? Can you think of anything else that I can suggest to the dealer?

He is telling me that at this point, he is ready to put the bike back together and told me that he would not worry too much about it. I asked him to replace the switch anyways since he broke it, but he doesn't see a need. He said he will just put a washer on it and it will hold as good as new.

I figure I'll be buying a new switch anyways just for a piece of mind.

Any help is appreciated from you or anyone else who has ideas.

You can email me @ 00zx12r@home.com if you don't want to post a reply here.

Thanks
Eric

This sounds familiar. I think that someone who posts over on Easy's site had this problem and the cure for it. I'll have to go investigate!!

OK... I found it!! Not sure how to post a link to a thread on Easy's site. The info I'm talking about was posted on 10/24/01 by jmbrenner. The thread is titled "FI Code 25 weirdness".

Cool...I found it...reading it now.

Thanks for the help.

Here is the link

From this it sounds like it is

"a weird case of tolerance stack-up which results in the shift hub itself not being in good cotact with the metal frame in 6th gear"

a quote from jmbrenner.

I'll see what the dealer and Kawasaki has to say about this.
