The scenario

You're on the freeway with nothing but empty space ahead. So, you open her up. Let's say you're doing 180 MPH+ when out of nowhere, the man comes at you from the opposite direction, and goes hot. You know there's an exit 5 miles up the road. What do you do?

I'm assuming you are driving a 12 when this happens.

Take the exit, goto Starbucks, meet a girl, goto a ho-tel...

Don't lift- keep it hot as long as it's clear ahead and as long as you're being safe at speed. Zippy chance by the time he turns around and gets up to speed (for which he can not match anyway.. sustained...) within a mile or two he will have already given up chase. If you lift; 100% chance you're going to jail. If you don't then at least you have a chance of getting away. Don't go too far before exiting because you can't outrun the radio.

...in the perfect world the cop will put out a BOL (be on the look-out)...if one is avalable, the cop will request the assistance of an airship...don't bother looking up for the helo...at 180mph, your neck will snap in half if you do that...if its a quiet night and a quiet road, the cops in the area will turn off their engines, reduce the volume of their radios, and listen for anything sounding like its going 180mph...then they'll vector in towards the sound or the helo will have had spotted you and start coordinating the ground units...they would know where the exits are or your direction of travel...they could be waiting...if you match the BOL, you might get stopped...if the airship had uninterupted visual of you, you're done...in the perfect world, of course

...but this isn't the perfect world...they'd just think that you're one crazy-ass mofo and hope you don't kill yourself and make them look at what's left of your spam of a gooey mass if you crash at that speed...then one of them would wonder what part he could buy off what's left of your bike:lnaha

It don't matter none in Jersey. If your clocked at a triple diget speed your goin to jail & won't be drivin for a long spell. So it don't matter if you run cause you already have the max.

I have been runnin the Interstae at 150+ for many years and the Troopers ignore me but the local hicks are lookin for a thrill & will chase. I wouldn't suggest that you do one thing or the other because you go into another zone when runnin & your knees start flappin against the gas tank from the fear & all of a sudden you have to pee .

I have two friends that take off their plates and deliberately get local hick cops to chase them.

I never really pictured myself as running from the cops. I'm rather a law abiding citizen...I pay my taxes (probably more than I shoud) and such.

But one time I was cruising at 130+ and then saw the ol' brake lights on the left side of the road. After I hesitated and lifted when I passed him I was doing 115. "Aw, hell no - I'm not going to jail" was my immediate reaction. I knew if I stopped I was going to jail. So nail it I did (on my little 600 mind you). Just a couple of miles later at 160+ I never even knew if he pulled out or not...I swore I saw blue lights reflecting on the exit signs.

I exited, cut a couple of steets, stopped, and wanted to puke. I almost couldn't stand up.

Rationally I'm not sure what I think of all that. Part of me really likes it, part of me knows it's really stoooooopid.

But I just have that twitch...that itch that I have to scratch...and I can't help myself...

I don't condone such behavior and I question those who go out just to goad the police. I guess I just have this disease - a sickness that needs to be taken care of. And the only cure is speed. Sometimes I can control it. Sometimes I just can't. Those are the times I'm popping little wheelies in town and jumping little hills and such.

Bottom line: think on your feet...follow your gut...know your instincts and follow them. Know your limitations or you'll be hauled out in a body bag. Know that if you do nail it there is the real possibility you'll be in a body bag.

Do what your hands, feet, and body tell you to do. Trust them. Listen to your motorcycle. Know when it's had enough.

Know when it's telling you to back off.

Stop.

Know when it's asking for more.

And then give it.

If I see him before he gets a chance to light me up, I may not let him get close enough to do it. (I never saw any police cars behind me officer!!) If it's obvious that he is pulling me over, I'll go with the stop and beg tactics. They often work, especially for big tickets.
If it's just a minor speeding ticket, I won't even consider running. $135 beats a D felony anytime.
I've talked to a few guys who claim to like to bait the cops, I find that amazingly stupid. And everytime one of them gets away, we get one step closer to having a police helicopter here.

Couple years ago I was riding some of the local counrty roads in my area when a guy passed me from the opposite direction going like a bat out of hell. I made a quick u turn & got on his ass figuring we could run some of the twisties just to see who was faster.

I caught the guy & he stopped to tell me that the cops were chasing him. I doubled back & ran into two local cops that had the road blocked. They asked me if I had seen a blue bike (mine was green) & I told them no .

Eddy - you from Nuke Jersey too? lol. I'm up here in north jersey - green 2000 '12 with a muzzy on it. You can't miss me - I'll be the p-whipped 6'2" guy with a 6'2" chick on the back . We kinda make the '12 look like a 600.

Here is an interesting story (for those who live in NJ - you may appreciate this)

I just clocked 2000 miles on the '12 - she was "officially" broken in - and I was on Interstate 287 going south. Well... my wrist couldn't resist anymore, so I clicked down a few gears, and LIT THE BASTARD UP! I passed 160 or 170 or so indicated, and backed down (too chicken sh#% to go any faster at the time) and settled into traffic at about 70 or so. Well, about 10 miles or so down the road, I check my rear views, and I notice a Statie ON MY ASS, so I pull into the right lane. He hits the lights (already has my plate I'm sure, cause I didn't notice him coming in behind me - DARN LOUD MUZZY!! I pull the '12 off to a safe turn off and get ready to go to jail. The trooper comes up to the bike and I'm already like "sorry bla bla bla". He grins and checks the bike over - and goes back to his car. To make a long story short - he tells me that "his radar wasn't on" but he was "concerned that I may be weaving in and out of traffic too much" (BTW - I never weaved at ALL - stuck to the left lane the whole time I was on the highway). He goes on to tell me that he's a bike nut and this was the "first" 12 he had a chance to see - hands me a written warning and says "NOW SLOW THE HELL DOWN - ok. Off the record. How fast WERE you going?"

LOL - I think I replied somthing lame like "130 or so..." he was like "YEAH, SURE. Take care bud!"

Sometimes you get lucky.

BIG BIG karma to the trooper who saved my license!
