My dog has to have surgery tomorrow
My dog Hailey was injured last Saturday while playing with another dog and had her knee cap dislocate. I took her to the Vet and they popped it back in and said I have to get surgery done quickly. It turns out she suffers from Luxating Patellas and the injury made it very unstable. It has popped out no less than 10 times a day since then. So tomorrow they will put her under and they have to deepen the channel that the knee cap slides in by grinding down the bone, then they have to shave another part of the bone down and tighten up all the soft tissue surrounding the joint. She won't be able to put any weight on it for at least 2 weeks and I will have to put ice packs on the knee 3 times a day for 15 minutes each time. Then start rehab by moving her leg back and forth three - 5 times day and go to friends house to let her swim 15 minutes a day. She won't be back to normal for at least 8-12 weeks. It so sad cause she has already been through so much, survived the dreaded Parvo virus when she was a pup and has had another gastointestinal problem about 2 months ago when she was hospitalized for 4 days. I hope everything comes out ok in the surgery. Think a good thought for her.

Damn....
Sorry to hear this C. I know how much Hailey has been through, you and I have discussed it more than once. She has sure had a hard way to go. I'll say a little prayer for her. I hope it all goes well.
I've still got the pics of her when she was just a tiny pup. Man she has really grown!!!!!!!!

K9 Uoschi and I send our good thoughts to you and Hailey.
I know that he has a job that puts him in harm's way, but I'd be devastated beyond belief if anything really bad happened my boy...so I know your concern and your devotion for Hailey.

Hey good luck. I have a big soft spot in the old heart for dogs. Had to put my 14 year old Dobe down a few months back and I have still not gotten over the entire ordeal.

Hailey likes the camera
I'm sure all will go well.
I had a lot of problems with my 11 year old Great Dane when he was a pup. But for the last ten or so years has been healthy as an Ox.
He weighs in at 155lbs. and stands 36 inchs at the shoulders. Not real tall as Great Danes go. He's with me every day even at the office, not looking forward to him moving on.
Keep us up to date.

man, i just love danes, but i always heard they commonly only live to be like 5. i just couldnt take that. just visited a friend today & he told me one of his dogs (who i know well) may not be around much longer, as his cancer appears to have returned in a bad way. damn near teared up just at the thought. unlike people, dogs usually arent bastards. they dont deserve to get sick & die

155 POUNDS!!! Damn that's big. My sister has a brindle dane, a female, but she's only maybe 120 or so.
WEll Hailey is here with me at work right now, she knows somethings up cause I never bring her to work this early. She is wondering why the hell she couldn't go back to bed like she normally does when I leave for work. I take her in at 8:30.
Thanks for the thoughts guys, hopefully all goes well.

Danes are good for 8 solid years. I've seen them live longer, but usually, not well. The sad truth is that in most cases, the larger the breed, the shorter the quality life you can expect. The mitigating factor to that equation is how active the breed is. Ie; a very active large breed will typically have a shorter lifespan than a less active breed. I think my Rhodesian Ridgeback is gonna live to about 42, based on that.
