Misssing, backfiring, and charging failure
I recently put a new battery, and LED turn signals and tail lights on my bike. I made one trip into town with no problems. The next time I road, it was spitting and sputtering. It's been sitting for a few months. I cranked it the other day with a jump box, and when I removed the jump box the bike would go dead... HELP! Did I screw up putting on cheap after market lights, or is it all coincidense? Could it be a fuse? Where's my alternator? When it's running it will run smooth, then sputtery, then smooth and so on. Injector?

I KNOW it is a Pain but pull out your New Battery and see if it is dead! You may have shorted out something and killed your new Battery! With a Weak Battery the Bike will run like that!

take a look at the alternator plugs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! may be the alternator is gone ??

I'll look into it when I get time, maybe this weekend. Thanks for helping me trouble shoot this...It's a 2000 with about 7000 miles.

Well, I made time. I put the battery on charge, and looked at the plugs. The one you had a picture of looks ok, but the one beside it is discolored on mine. It looks as though the wiring harness side got a little hot. I unplugged it. The inside looks ok.

thats oil !!!! -- going up into the wiring from the alternator !!!!!!!
go to your kawa dealer !!! and tell him that !! they have to fix this problem !!!
there was a recall action !!!!!! because of this !!!!!

your stator has creeping oil and had burned up the plug. Dealership? you're better off fixing it yourself---unless you have a really good dealership. My dealer was dumbfounded when I told them how to fix it. They were going to, but I had way more knowledge on the repair process than they did. It took me a couple hours and I never had another issue with it. Dealer wanted top keep it for a few days which I know would have been weeks.
I'm not saying this will fix your problem, but I'd bet your stator wires are toast..which could be contributing to your issues.

You know what...I was just reading thru all of this and I think I have the same thing going on with my bike. Battery is fine however, I do see a lot of oil coming off this alternator plug.

Keep in mind that, if left un-fixed, you will eventually fry the alternator, and possibly burn out the headlight relay in the junction box..
I recently was reminded of this "the hard way" with a total meltdown of the system.
