tankslappers everywhere!!
seems as if everywhere you look or listen or read, its tankslappers galore. never have i experienced a full blown tankslapper and already i'm freaked (no offense freek). I am not one to visualize bad, but i keep seeing myself doing 150 down the highway and bap bap bap and down i go. if all i have to do to make certain that this never happens is to drop 400 or so on a good dampener then i think im gonna do it.
scotts is like 450 or so and i'm not even sure if the 00/01 product will fit an 02 zx12. muzzys setup is over 500 i think. damn thats expensive. i could use some advice from some of the big dogs on this one.

i'v had a few bar wobbles but never developed into a full tankslapper yet (where the front end whacks back and forth lock to lock, the clipons almost "slapping" the tank). i'v always just ridden them out with my arms fairly relaxed. they just went away. not sure what is the best technique to control a tankslapper. i usually jsut hear gun it to get wheight off the front wheel.

they way ive read and heard it described that made the biggest impression upon me is.......when the front wheel suddenly becomes slightly unbalanced due to some front to back, or back to front weight shift (wheelies, bump in the road, whetever). and then the speed of travel exaggerates the unbalancing to the point where the handlebars are "slapping" the tank back and forth until the problem either miraculously self corrects or you go flying at 100+mph and pray that you are wearing leathers and land in hay or something.

Well I am not a "Big Dog" on this site but I'll answer anyway!!! LOL 
I have never had a tank slapper on my ZX12R. Not even a little one!!! (I ride like hell...well, before I broke my leg)
My next investment is the Scott's dampner (nice unit) anyway....just to be safe!!! Can't hurt!!!

i heard dings about you......dings. from what i can tell you can run with the bigdogs plenty fine. i'm a fan of the scotts myself, 2 questions:
1) what triple clamps will the scotts dampner work with?
2) where is a good place to buy the scotts dampner for a good price?

Tank slappers usually occur under accerleration and a bump is encountered. The effects can be either thrilling or death. I had one of a stock 12 (necromancer's) as I was getting it on pretty hard in third gear.
If you push your forks up in the tripple clamps to make your steering quicker you also increase the potential for a tank slapper. The dampner helps to elimate and or minimize the problem. I have a Scotts on my 12 and love it. As a side benefit, the dampner also lets you crawl around on the bike without upsetting the bike as easy.
The wild thing to remember if you experience head shake / a tank slapper don't fight it. The Harder you grip the bars and try to stop it the worse it gets. Relax (very hard to do) and let the natural gyro effect of the wheel get control of the headshake. One other extremely important thing to remeber about a severe headshake is that when this occurs the front barake pads / calipers are usually pushed in or shaken back and away from the disk as a result. This puts the bike in a similar condition as if you just changed the tire and pushed the pads back with a screw driver. Therefore you have no brakes. If you don't realize this run up to a corner etc, pull on the front brake you will have zero brakes and crash. If you have a tank slapper you need to remember to pump your front brake lever to push the pads back to where they belong.
One other piece of advice. If you are going to by a dampner. Buy the Scotts. I have had several types and brands over the years. The Scotts is the only dampner that I have had that survives crashes without being bent or destroyed!

In the realm of $400. I purchased the 4 that I have all through Mike Velasco. Don't know that I got any kind of a special deal, but he does my work, treats me fairly and has always been there to solve my problems regardless of the make model etc. of the bike.

I am not sure why no one is suggesting the Muzzy (based on a Hyperpro, i believe) but I sure give the Muzzy unit a 100% recommendation. Beautiful unit and it simply bolts on.

Amen to that Entrophy! FWIW, if youre not skilled a minor fabrication, the Scotts install can be frustrating. The Muzzy costs $150 more, but requires no drilling or special tools!

I've had a bad one last year. It went from the front to the rear wheel. The whole bike was dancing at 140, I kept my arm's relaxed and stayed in it. Till it stopped. Then I pulled over and threw my boxer's away. It's bad at any speed.
Was'nt too bad till it transfered to the rear wheel. Then It got real bad.

The Hyperpro is a good damper, but their mounting system for the 12 sucks. The Muzzy damper uses the Hyperpro, with their own mounting system that is much cleaner. The Scotts damper mounts on top of the triple tree, and requires two holes be drilled into the frame/airbox. Small hands help. The Scotts is by far the most rugged and adjustable damper out there. For roadracing, I wouldn't think of anything else. For street riding, it's what looks best for you. I would say the biggest difference between the scotts and the others is how much work it is to install it.

My Muzzy dampner was a little pricey but it was a perfect, easy install....I'm really pleased with it. My son just bought a Scotts for his 12 (gotta be different from Pop) and we'll see how time consuming it will be to put it on.

Here is the kicker in my opinion between the Scotts and everyone else. The Scotts dampner has thre types of adjustment. Hi speed, low speed and field of motion. You can set the resistance and then limit it to a specific area. Tank slappers occur under acceleration and in pretty much everycase a straight line. You can set the Scotts so that it only effects a 17 degree area (straight and 8.5 degrees each way or you can add to that field of motion. What this means is that in a parking lot or around town you don't fight the dampner. It works at the level and in the range you want it to.

Muzzys Damper
I recommend the Muzzys damper. Have installed both the Muzzys on my green 12R and the Scotts damper on a red 12R. The Muzzys is a nicer piece and as mentioned above requires no drilling.
