Strange problem with my 12, any ideas?
17,500 miles on her and in the last few weeks it seems that one out of every 5 times I put her in neutral, the green light doen not light up. It is, in fact, in neutral but no light. Also, when this happens and I put the kickstand down, the motor shuts off, obviously thinking itis in gear. Anyone else have this issue? Anyone know what the cause may be?
It's not that big of a deal, just wondering what's up.

Similar
Otis - when I pull to a stop at the light, and feather the gear shifter into Neutral, sometimes if I'm not clean with the shifting it kinda hangs in limbo between 1st and Neutral, so mechanically its IN neutral but the green light does not come on. I have to push it back down into 1st, move the bike a few inches and then try again - it cleanly shifts into Neutral.
With my RD350, I can't even shift back into Neutral from 1st if I've fully come to a stop with engine running, so this problem with the 12 does'nt bother me that much.

Yeap, I roll a step or two and try it again.
I have noticed that it happens most of the time after some hard or long riding!!!

Sounds like a plausable excuse to buy a new bike! Unless of course you are happy with the one you have and don't really need a new bike. If so consider it a normal state of affairs. Nothing to worry about just makes you be more precise in putting it into neutral.

The little spring loaded brass contactor in the shift drum which pushes against the gear position sensor is probably sticking or may be contaminated. I'd get this looked at because it may also may not be telling the ECU which gear you are in. BTW, the two phillips screws that hold the sensor in are VERY tight and are locktited. Do not attempt to remove them without a hammer impact with the correct bit.

Doug is right, also the 12 has the positive neutral finder, it should find neutral when in first and stopped by just pulling up on the shifter.

me too
Mine has always done that too. I have a 2000 (faster green model) and it has done that since day one. Is it necessary for the ecu to know what gear it is in on a 2000? Since there is no limiter? I did notice that after I had over 6000 miles on it and went to full synthet oil that it got better but it still does it some. Sometimes if I rev the engine it will free up the "stuck" contact and the light will pop on. Mine will die too if the kick stand is put down. I figured that it was just another ZX12R quirk that I had to live with and now I am fairly used to it. Kinda like the oil pumping up the rear wiring harness even after I sealed it up at the alternater cover?

Mine did that pretty much from day one, and just got worse with every push button shift on the track, after 430 passes it was getting somewhat cranky, indeed.
During some recent engine tweaks the builder put in new forks, drum, 2/6 gearset, and the shimmed the trans. Don't know exactly what he "shimmed" but I now shift better than new, and the neutral finder REALLY works. No finessing needed, just toe it up and the neutral light comes on.

Mine has also done it occasionally...maybe 4 times in 2 years so I didn't really think it was a problem. -ZXtra

Humm, I have not had any problems with the neutral finder, it finds neutral fine, just no light. Well if Wrenis and Entropy has been dealing with this since day one with no ill side effects, I'm just going to leave it.

I had a Czech origin Jawa motorcycle back in India a long time ago. It was a 250 cc 2-stroke. The gear selector also doubled up as the kick starter. The throws in each gear was SO huge, I used to take my foot off the gear lever and use my ankle to shift! It had a 4 speed tranny, and had a false neutral in each gear! So it needed a hard upshift and downshift, otherwise you'd have the tranny stuck in the false neutral while you gassed it and the engine would zing to redline, making a huge cacaphony of 2 stroke noise!!
Kick starting it to life was also an experience in itself. I'd have to reverse the gear lever, and crank the engine over a few times, sorta to build up pressure in the chamber, and then give it a violent kick. Makes a simple procedure like a start a fun filled (depending on whether it started or not) event
Also had a similar tranny problems with a 2-stroke Zundapp made motorcycle back then. The tranny was *so* screwed up, the cogs would just not stay in position. For e.g., if I'd downshift into 1st from neutral, it would stay there for a few seconds and then jump back, and the engine would zoom to redline since there was no load and the throttle was open. Of course there was also the problem of the tranny not wanting to stay in a particular gear I shifted it to, but that's another story.
Heh - I've had my share of weirdo bikes. So yeah..my 12 shifts Grreaat!

don't know why but after changing the clutch plates I had the same problem. solved it by readjusting my clutch cable a couple of flats.
