Favorite Tires
Picked up a used '00 12r on wednesday. Guy dropped it about a year ago and it was just sitting (>< wives!), so he let it go for 2k with 5700 miles on it .
HOWEVER, Thursday took it out to some twisty's and coming out of two corners getting on the throttle the rear felt like it was walking out. Not alot but enough to make me uncomfortable. Anyway, the tires have about 3k miles on em, but they have been sitting in the garage for about a year. The compound on the Chicken strip area seams reaaaaaaly freaking hard, and Im gonna pick up a set of tires.
I've done some searching, but figured i'd find a "Everyones favorite tire" thread. But i didn't.
Perhaps im an idiot, but if someone would mind pointing me in the right direction i'd appreciate it.
Also i was lookin at a Fairly high performance tire, and was willing to sac some mileage for that.
Anyone have any experience with the Pirelli Diablo Super Corsa's as a street tire? Or are they just too soft to get any mileage out of? Even in the sc2 and sc3 compounds. I know they're a popular track tire.

Well i've been reading reviews on the Corsa III's and the Supercorsa's and i cant seem to find my biggest question about these two specifically.
Heating. I know ANY and all tires need to heat up to be their best, but how long do each of these tires take to warm up. And are the supercorsa's crap until you really get on them, I.E. track day only?
And twista you said you like your setup, they get warm quickly? I just, i rode like 20 mins up to the hills to find some good twisty's, and was playing weaving etc, and the stockies i got on there STILL scared me, lol.

Metzlers !!! They warm up quickly, have extreme grip...even in the rain. Only downside is soft compound wears quickly!

hey Bondguy welcome to the site.....that being said....we need more information to help point you in the right direction of tires.....are you a trackday guy? do you ride alot of twisties? do you put alot of miles on the bike/or will you? Do you do any sport touring? I know you said you just bought this bike, but what are your intentions with it?
For Sport touring and minimal twisities, I would run the Pilot Road 2's or Diablo Corsa III's
For twisties with no track time, I would run the Pilot Power or Pilot Power 2CT's or the Dunlop Qualifiers
For some tracktime and some twisties, I would run Pilot Power 2CT's, Dunlop Qualifiers, or one of the new Bridgestone tires.
For twisties and a lot of tracktime, I would run the Pirelli Super CorsaPros, Bridgestone BT 002 or 003's (the later if you can get them), or the Dunlop DOT race tires. I would stay away from the Michelin Pilot Race tires if the bike sees any street use, they are long to heat up and are slick until they do
For the track, any one of the DOT race tires or slicks.

Hey, i like the Recommendations.
Ill be doin Daily Driving, evening twisties. Any reason You put the Diablo Corsa 3's as a Sport Touring tire? i've heard they are comparable to the pilot power 2ct's. As far as track time goes, i have alot of getting used to of this beast of a bike before i go near the track with it. seems to me 165lbs is barely enough weight to keep that front tire from floating in 3rd, and thats something to get used to :P.
Im not really concerned with life, i'd like 3000ish miles out of them, if i get more, cool, if i get less, meh. I really just want a tire i can realllly trust when i do want to start keeping up with my buddy on his little r6 through the turns.

I dont have a lot of expierence with the Corsa III's, but from what I hear they stick almost as good as the Powers, and give better mileage...so I stuck it with the sport touring. IE better mielage out of them....Mileage is a huge thing when touring, nobody wants to stop in the middle of a trip to put new tires on....If I were going to do some serious twisties I would want the little better traction advantage of the Powers or the Power 2CT's. I have ran the Powers on the race track and in the mountains and can attest first hand as to the traction they provide, which for a street tire is great.
If all you are going to do for now is ride it as a commuter bike and some mild twisties, I would go for a more high mileage tires like the Corsa III's or the Pilot Road 2's. The tires like the powers and qualifiers will give better traction, with half the mileage. So its a trade off, mileage or traction, you just need to decide which is more important to you....
On the street I dont recomment a track tire, most need to be much hotter than the average rider is capable of in most situations on the street. And remember that DOT race tires and slicks work on heat cycles, after so many the rubber starts to vulcanize and harden....thats not a good thing. I know alot of guys out there are riding on them on the street....truth be told they would be just as fast on good street tires and not have to worry about heat or heat cycles.
If I remember these figures right and I may not.....the Pirelli Supercorsa Pro works its best at like 145 degrees, the BT002's are like 138 degrees, the Michelin Pilot Race is like 160 degrees. I dont know about you all, but without warmers I dont want to try to get these tires up to temp on the street......one note, almost all of the crashes on our local race track is due to cold race tires.

I just picked up a set of The Corsa III's, went with a 190 in the rear. Ill see how i like em. If they don't inspire enough confidence in the corners ill try those ct2s
Thanks for your help guys.
