DYMAG Update

I said I would post if I received my new cush drive. Well, today I returned from the movie "Signs" and it had arrived.
Hopefully the hub is made of a different material to better retain the bearing. The most obvious difference is in the through holes for the hub bolts. This way you can tighten them without removing the entire wheel. This is just a stop gap method in any case but at least you can adjust them without removing the entire wheel assembly as was previously required. There is a warning in the letter about proper torque and thread sealer so if the bolts back out you can still damage the bearing bore if you don't catch it quickly. Just another thing to go over on your pre-ride checks.
My previous hub had lasted 15,000 miles. Hopefully this one will last longer.
Again thanks to the labusas person who was able to track this down and special thanks to Andy Goswell of Dymag for coming through when all hope seemed lost.

I am glad you got you're parts from Dymag. I have been trying to get the bearing and sprocket carrier update kit since January 2002. I have had no luck so far getting a reply to e-mails sent to Dymag. Superbike Racing has stopped selling Dymag as of this week and Island racing is re-evaluating theyre relationship with Dymag due to poor customer support. Island Racing's web site states that they will try to help with warranty claims if you purchased wheels from them. This leaves me out since mine came through Superbike Racing.

johns? In the previous post I had stated that I purchased my custom carbon wheels from Superbike racing of Valdosta Georgia. Email andy.goswell@dymag.com, he is a vice president, for all that's worth, but he did respond and my sproket carrier was mailed on July 22nd which I received today. I don't know what happened with Andrew of Superbike racing and Dymag but Dymag is trying to respond to the customer problems, now. I didn't have to provide proof of purchase or anything. They took me at my word and kept theirs. This is what should be expected when you pay $1550 for a wheel which is what I had paid Superbike. I am just happy that I don't have a large and expensive carbon fiber paperweight any more.

Guys I don't know how I missed your first post; but mine failed in Nov. 00' on the "Sports Magniesum" model (5-spoke, gold.) I got mine from IRS in Tx, & David Hirsh took care of the warranty for me. Apparently from what I was told the Busa model was having similar failures in 99' just prior to the Ninja coming out; & they had to increase the strength of their sprocket carriers too. Mine failed on a simple backroad ride at 1500 miles; with the bearing coming loose in the carrier.

David told me mine was "the first ZX12R w/this issue." It took about 4-5 weeks to get the new carrier as apparently they had to mold a new one. I was told all the new mags would have the update (including the holes for tightening the bolts, which caused my problem. No loctite on the allen head bolts that hold the hub together.)

Mine's been fixed now, & I've put about another 3500 miles on the new one without problems. IRS is now out of the Dymag business due to the mentioned poor customer service issue. There is a new distributor here in San Francisco, but I have not found out info on them yet (looking.) I'd appreciate hearing your initial failure info (or point me to the post?), & if I find this new distributor, I'll let you know...

Dave

I recieved a e-mail from Andy Goswell at Dymag today. They will ship the update kit within 48 hours he says. I still don't know where I can purchase replacement sprockets (made by Talon in England)since superbike racing and Island Racing will no longer represent Dymag. Anyone have another source? Last time I checked Sprocket specialties does'nt have a sprocket for the newer style Dymags.

Damn! This is getting to be less and less entertaining. Does anyone have a source for the Talon sprockets? Other than Superbike Racing and the other frustrated dealer? I have emailed Andy Goswell at Dymag to see if he has a US source (I have found others in the UK but would rather not have to go that route). I also mentioned the defective hub damaged my apparently rare Talon sprocket. I have emailed Streetfighters USA, since they are/were apparently still willing to sell Dymag wheels, to see if they have sprockets from Talon or anyone else at this point.
Sheesh, now all I need is Turboblew to get in here with his 2 cents about how I should have gotten RC wheels.

I believe (you can check) that sprocket specialties will make a master if you send them a talon sprocket to get measurements off of for the Dymags. I just hate to give up the gold matching sprockets if I can find a new US source.

johns,
I just received a return email from Andy Goswell. He offered to send me a replacement Talon sprocket, free. If your sprocket was damaged by the wobbling of the defective sprocket carrier, mine were, then he should be able to send you a free replacemnt too. Just tell him how many teeth you are running. I have a 46, 48 and a 50 but only the 48 is severely damaged. Meantime he doesn't have a current US distibutor for the Talon sprockets. He suggested that Renthal makes a sprocket for the Dymags. I am going to give Renthal a try. I have gotten used to the gold Talons too but the only places I was able to find them is in Belgium and the UK. I'll continue to try Streetfighters too.
