what terrible, terrible news. I can hardly imagine the scene as it unfolded. I hope the bastard that caused it all didn't 'get away'. If he did, he will get his in the end.
I will say a few special prayers for the young lady and the guys having trouble absorbing it all. As I read the end of your note, I had an odd feeling that it would all be ok for her. I can only hope that the feeling comes true.
Ang. I'm sure many of us still think of you and say a little prayer for your recovery too.

Thanks so much Guy's!!!!
The Person in the car that caused the accident (Cut off the SUV) just kept going....I do not know if they were even aware of the accident behind them.
They cut right in front of the SUV...If the SUV (Expedition) would not have slammed on his breaks - the car would have clipped him as it entered his lane.....

First, your friends will be in my thoughts. All of them.
Could have... would have... should have... It's so simple, yet so ugly at times like these. Full gear or just a helmet might have changed how things turned out and then again, maybe not. We will never know.
I just bought a cheap dirt bike helmet for test riding my "restored" KDX. I didn't feel comfortable wearing my Arai Quantum and felt even worse not wearing anything. The thing is, I will fight to the ends of the earth for the rights of a "mature" rider to choose (to be stupid, IMHO). To me, it's a "common sense and probability" thing.
Not to imply that your friends lacked common sense. No, it's not that at all. It's the probability part. Dirty Pete has said that ANY accident is avoidable. I disagree, but there is some validity to his statement. Over time, we tend to become over confident in either our capabilities, the bike's capabilities and our ability to forcast potential dangers or hazards.
Then we start to get mentally lazy. It affects all of us to some degree or level. It might be following too close, not having a finger or two on the brake lever or even doing that "short run to the store" without a helmet. If any one here says they have never like that... they are lying.
Riding with protective gear can really suck. The helmet messes up your hair and it makes it difficult to talk to the other riders. A leather jacket and gloves in the middle of summer just make your roast in dripping sweat at every stop light you get "caught" at (I won't even get into FULL leathers). To make matters worse, when you get to where ever you going, now you have to lug all that stuff around.
I know. About six years ago, I was stupid enough to ride my bike to a Bush/Veruca Salt concert and ended up having to stand all night having to hold all my shit. What was my mistake? Riding with all that bullshit gear? No. My mistake was that I should not have taken the bike and just drove the truck instead.
I've always said that there are two types of riders. Those that have been down and those that are going down. It's not a matter of "if", but "when". I have been call fatalistic, unskilled and paranoid, to mention a few. Still, on this site alone, some of our most skilled and competent riders or their friends (which I'm sure are equally skilled and competent) have experienced some form of accident.
The "list" just keeps growing. Nano, Angi, Wilson, Mike, Dave, Harry or even a friend of mine I was riding with just a couple of weeks ago ... I could go on. All of them great riders and I've rode with most of them at one time or another. Their circumstances and the results of their accidents might be radically different, but the fact remains, they went down. Now I can't help but think that if such skilled riders can have an accident, either by fate or a momentary lapse in judgement, why the hell would I think that the very same could NOT happen to me?
Should I just get rid of my bike and live "safely" for the rest of my life? Yeah, and break my neck in the friggin' shower some morning. NO! I will not get rid of my bike! I will not stop riding! What I will do is turn the "reasoning meter" up another notch and do it again, every time I hit the starter button or kick start a bike.
This brings me to my point of no matter what happens from now on, there is some "good" to this so very tragic situation. My AA sponsor is thinking about getting back into bikes (cruisers) after a 15+ year break. As a matter of fact, we're going to look a used bike tomorrow night.
When he was thinking about buying a new one, I suggested he ask if the dealer would throw in a helmet with the deal. He told me he was "not really into the helmet thing". It's both a blessing and a shame that you, others here on the board and especially your friends paid the price of providing me the information to teach a lesson of ... common sense and probability.
Godspeed to all of you.

WOW, all I can say is WOW. Reading stories like this makes me sick to my stomach. I miss riding so much, but the way the streets are, and other carless drivers, I'm almost glad IM going back to drag racing cars where I will have a cage around me. I really hope she makes it through this and recovers. And I really hope the other riders that were involved in this make it also (mentally).

The problem was that she had become too comfortable on the back of that bike. She trusted her husband totally. We think that she may have been holding on to the back bar (not sure).
RedElk - your right - all kind's of Woulda, Shoula, Coulda......
Bottom line - We can all reduce our chances of serious injury..
You've got mail Need4Speed (at home) and Derrek...
BA - I'll be fine. My accident was a little more self induced than this one. I know that when you put 200hp under your butt and try to run 1/4 mile in 8 seconds - Anything can happen. I would have got up and walked away if it wasn't for the leg!!! (Full protective/padded gear) I'll be back to normal in a few months!!!
I also understand that this is a risk that you take everytime you jump on your bike....but I know that I can lower the risk by being aware and protected!! Please be safe out there guy's!!!!
