Starter motor

I need help - see thread 'is it broke?'

I have replaced my battery, but the bike still won't start on the starter. The relay chatters...

I checked the relay function - it's OK.

I need to check the stater motor - I have the lower panels off, and the water header off. I have removed the top 2 bolts from the starter motor, but can't see anything else holding it on.... if I could get a hammer in there I'd shift it.

If you know - please enlighten me. The manual is pretty useless....

I would really like to harm everyone involved with the design of this bike.

did you check the connections at the battery box? that will do it sometimes..,, if you notice,, the cable that feeds the starter comes from the battery box,, and if you rode in the rain,, or if something loosened up,, this might be the cause,, it happened to me on the 01 i just picked up as a parts bike,, had toi play with that connection down there,, good luck!

to remove the starter......first remove battey ground or starter motor wire lug in battery compartment. next the 2 starter mounting bolts now PULL LIKE HELL ON THE STARTER.
i have my engine on the bench now and i still had to pry it out to break loose the o-ring.

I have a starter on Ebay right now for sale...

anyway sometimes the brushes will come off or not make contact. you can take the starter an pull it apart and make sure they are making contact correctly... I have fixed a couple...

Hi Guys - thanks for the advice. I'm off to sunny Libya for a couple of weeks so unless I get time tomorrow, I'm pretty screwed. It's a nightmare working in these restricted spaces. I'll need to complete the fault finding b4 I commit to buying a new anything.

If the starter is at fault I guess there is a short in it. I think the relay pulls on, the starter absorbs so much power the from the battery that the relay drops out, and repeats.... or my new battery is a dud.

I'm planning some long foreign trips, so I need it all to be right.

I'd like to harm the designer of this bike..... did Kawasaki think it would work forever, or only sell to gynacologists?
