Slotted Cam Sprockets ?
I'm getting into the valve check procedure this weekend on my 02 ZX12R. I've read through Blitz's procedure so many times I think I could do it blind folded. If I need to adjust the valves, which I'm sure I will with 10,700 miles on it, I'm thinking I might as well do slotted cam sprockets and degree the cam's.
My question....should I just buy the Muzzy sprockets, or is possible to cut slots in the stock sprockets?
Of course I'll be measuring the degree of the lobe centers before making a purchase just on the off chance they are at 105in/103ex already. I have a full Muzzy stainless system and a PC3r. Street use only.
I've degreed the cam on chevy and ford small block V8s, but never a motorcycle engine. I'm guessing the basic process is the same, aside from the obvious differences, is there any thing I should specifically be cautioned about on the 12R motor to avoid that dreaded valve-piston collision?

you cant slot the stock sprockets. the stock ones are pressed on(1 piece). the aftermarket ones have a piece that is pressed on, and has a slotted sprocket that bolts to that(2 piece)

Double check your valves, just to be sure, but I have not had to adjust them yet.........
over 900 passes on a motor, and it was in spec, and the motor I just got had over 10000 miles on it when it was shipped to me, all were within spec except one exhaust was .0005 out, which is nothing, and not really worth messing with.......

Before pressing off the stock sprockets, make real good reference marks on the cams for the new sprocket adapters. The sprockets or adapters aren't keyed to the cams so they can be put on in any direction which can make it very confusing if you don't have a good, close starting point.

riteristrob You can slot the stock sprockets, but its a pain in the ass to do. Easiest to just buy the adjustable sprocket and get someone to press them on and off for you.

agreed in a way.. you can slot with a mill and rotary table..
unless you have a cnc you can write a program for to keep the radius of the slot correct..
the rotary table trick is perfectly fine tho if you like doing things yourself.. use a 4 flute 1/4" endmill (or whatever endmill fits the hole.. go a few thousandths under at first, and climb mill it)
just makesure that you reference a "0" degree mark to have something to go by on your tuning before milling the slots! (just way easier that way)

The stock gears are pressed on and dont have a hub to bolt a slotted gear to.
How is slotting the gear going to make it an adjustable set up?
Back in 1997 I slotted the stock gears on my CBR1100XX like you describe, but the gears were bolted on.
