In most cases, I'll just use my rear brakes when it's raining or I'm in a gravel parking lot. I'm tryin' to figure out the trail braking thing, but I ain't got the skill or brain power to do it yet.

Here we go again, let the flames begin, I use both and usually wear out the rears before the fronts. I use the rears to adjust corner speed, lean angle, and sometimes to set up a slide.

I guess I'll be flamed with you, Ted, cuz sometimes I'll use the rear to adjust speed into a corner, not to the point of skidding, but to slow down if I went in too hot...I use mostly the fronts with heavy countersteer to counter the bike standing up in the corner, but sometimes I just use the rear if the speed is not too, too hot...trail braking, right?...I need to be schooled at a track day or riding school before I really hurt myself DOH!

Similar to redelk, I use my rear brake in the rain and in some of the gravel situations along with setting at a stop light on a hill.

On occasion for shits and giggles, I will in the right circumstances use to the back brake to slide the rear end.

I use the rear brake when approaching corners to reduce speed slightly without unsettling the chassis, and have found it useful for slow speed u-turns. It allows you to modulate the throttle/clutch while maintaining forward momentum and cuts a tighter arc.

I still have a habit of using a lot of rear brake coming out of a corner as well. I picked up the habit with my old bike. ('86 Ninja 1000R) The throttle on that bike was insanely twitchy. It was not nearly as smooth as the one on my 12 now. So, coming out of corners, I used the rear brake to regulate the power being applied to the ground. I guess I had better feel doing it that way than trying to deal with a twitchy throttle. Plus it allowed me to get on the gas much earlier out of the turn.

I use very little rear brake. Mostly just to settle the suspension when coming to a stop or slowing for a corner. Like FM, I also use it during U-turns. I subscribe to "Slow in, fast out," so using the rear brake as a method of controlling the power being applied to the ground would be counter-intuitive to me. It would more likely cause me to "fall in" to corners rather than letting the 12 do it's rock-stable thing and letting me concentrate on rolling the throttle on progressively.

Yeah, it was counter intuitive to me at first. But, when you use the rear brake coming out of a corner, you don't have to 'roll the throttle on progressively.' You can go ahead and punch it early.

Of course, rolling the throttle on progressively, is a whole lot cheaper than replacing rear brake pads all the time and having the guy at the shop keep saying, "Rear brakes? You don't need those."

The rear brake settles the bike in a lot of different applications. Works well in the whoops on your moto-cross bike as well. With all that said I still don't use it much for actual braking.
