Dealer questions yellow box/need for... someone 'splain please....

Heya... mentioned to my dealer that I had a yellow box put in the bike.... main parts/repair guy asked why... I told him that it was cuz of the 17t sprocket I bought from him.... he said you dont need a yellow box as the speedo is driven off the tranny, not the shaft w/ sprocket and that changing the tranny gear ratio would affect the speedo NOT chaging sprocket size...

just what is the correct answer? all I know is that with the 17t sprocket my speedo was WAY off...

swft er someone splain please

Excuse me? So what if the speedo is driven off of the transmission. The electronics that Kawasaki put into the bike for the speedo has been told if you will the information on the final drive gearing based on the stock sprockets. Kawasaki's senser is in front if you will of the sprockets. The sensor cannot automatically adjust for changes down stream. His comment about the tranny gear ratio is correct except your not changing the transmission gear ratio, you are changing the final drive ratio.

The only system that is not be effected by a change in the gearing would be if the sensor was on the wheel like the old days!!

Fish...send him the blackrobotics website and tell him to talk to the man...before I installed my box, my 17/48 combo was off by about 10~12mph...after, and verified by ladar (that's a laser speed measuring device at work, not Mr. Miyagi-san telling you that its 'radar'), my yellowbox recalibrated 12R reads within 1~2 mph high of indicated speed.

Okay print and show the rocket scientist this:

RPM /(PrimaryRatio * Final Ratio * TransRatio) / (5280 / (Circumference/12)) *60 = MPH
for Example:

3000(RPM) / (1.596(Primary Ratio) * 2.555 (46/18) * 1.033(6th gear ratio)) / (5280(feet in a mile)/ 6.54(Circumference in feet)) * 60 = 52.9576 MPH
3000(RPM) / (1.596(Primary Ratio) * 2.705 (46/17) * 1.033(6th gear ratio)) / (5280(feet in a mile)/ 6.54(Circumference in feet)) * 60 = 51.0599 MPH
That countershaft will turn the same number of times(and that is where it is picked up) overall gear ratio has been changed AFTER it is picked up. If it were counting rear wheel revolutions then it wouldnt matter.

My reality check method........go to the extremes.

Mr. Mechanic, if what you're telling me is true and that changing sprocket size won't effect the speed reading because it's looking at how fast the transmission is turning.....then what would happen if I put a TINY sprocket on the front and a HUGE sprocket on the back and the transmission now had to turn 4 times as much to go the same speed ? Would it say I'm going 100 tranny speed while I'm going 25 ground speed or would it "just know" ? Since you're concerned about how fast the bike is actually moving and not how fast the transmission is spinning then it makes a difference. BTW, the speedo is off with stock gearing too.

Sanity check complete. You're sane fish, at least on this topic at this time.

Zhooligan..... I think if Steven Hawkins, came into the shop and told 'this guy' how it really is, 'this guy', would still argue about it, and insist he was right.
