New ZX12r Owner

Just brought my 2002 candy blue yesterday, my previuos bike was a 2000 zx9r. Can't wait to finish breaking it in, I've only been able to get 103 miles on it due to the rain. Okay I know you guys have heard this before but I have to ask. What can I expect form this upgrade in bikes? also is it necessary to follow the breakin period to a "tee"?

I won't get into the break in aspects. There are far more knowledgable folks here then I that can address that. I used Koz's method (which might be found via a search) and had a "pre-2000 mile break in" '00 12R. In other words, I already had over 5K miles on the bike before I received the "notice".

As for how the bike responds to modifications, no other bike can compare. "Numbers" and "results" are always debatable, but with the addition of items like a pipe, PCIIIR and filters have produced 15% gains. Not much, one might say? When that 15% equals 20+ RWHP, I'd say that's pretty "MUCH". Not to mention how well the bike responds, handling wise to suspension mods and different tire sizes.

So, just think of your new purchase as a Playboy centerfold and the available mods and tricks as an "airbrused over" remover!

Welcome to the forum.

Alot more power

The ZX12R gets stronger as you break it in. (You'll be able to tell)
Right now with following the break-in proc. your only using 1/3 of the actually power of the ZX12R. Once you are able to crank it WOT....Then you'll understand just how much more power that you have under your seat!!!!

The ZX12R is a great bike. You will get alot of thoughts on the break-in. I for one - DID take it easy for about the first 500-800 miles. But it was really hard after that. I did go above the recom. RPM's but just did not hold it there for long periods.

Redelk said think of your 12 as a Playboy Centerfold and then we talk about breakin.... The break in is about as tough as having a Playboy Center fold between your legs and saying "not today baby, We will have to wait a few weeks!"

breakin periods are hard to deal with, especially when your buddy on a R6 takes off and leaves you on the highway. I told him he better get his victories now because.......I can't wait. The method I used with my 2000 ZX9r was 4 grand from 0-300 miles, 6 grand from 300-500 then first service (oil change), 8 grand from 500-1000 (2nd oil change), and then take the gloves off. This worked well for my ZX9r, but I was told by my local kawi dealer that you should extend your breakin period a 1000 miles on the zx12r. Has anyone else heard of this?

Did I say... "Centerfold"? I ment PLAYMATE OF THE YEAR!

"not today baby, We will have to wait a few weeks!"

Z, maybe it's even more like sayin,

"not today baby, I'LL have to wait a few weeks! Now be a good lil' girl and go get me that 10mm socket... Yeah... in the very bottom drawer", as she bends over and tugs on the drawer of your LOCKED toolbox.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!

Extension? I don't need no stinkin' extention! Just ask my... nevermind.

If it ain't seated, broke in or broke off by 1000 miles... another thousand ain't gonna make any difference.

I will say this, even after you pass the 2K mark, you STILL haven't "experienced" all the 12R has to offer. Now when you get to about 4K miles, hold on to your... grips!

zx12r

I have just purchased a zx12r 2002, black and gold. For the first 800km I didn't go over 4000 rpm. After 800km, I am now taking it to 6000rpm. This feels very fast from what it does, even though it's not even close to be broken in.I know this because I also own a 2001 Yamaha V-max. Now after 6000km, the bike is much faster, than new. I have always known the v-max to be a fast custom so I think that I am going to be in for a surprise when I break in the zx12r!! Also, since I have picked up my zx12r idle speed is 1500-1700 rpm. Last night I turned it back to 1000rpm, Is this correct? Or is this too low??? Because when I shift into first gear from neutral it bangs hard...
Let me know what you think...Has anyone experienced on the zx12r the rear brake squealing from new to 1100km?

I put a thousand miles on mine put a 1270 kit in it. Then rode it about 800 miles and put a 1361 in it. I guess I fall in the catagory the more miles you put on the bike the more horsepower it has!!

That 2000cc kit is from Muzzy's and its by "invitation only". If you didn't get a registered letter from Muzzy's with the invitation, they WON'T sell you one, you are NOT on the list. In fact, if you call Dave, or Curt, or Doug Meyer, they will deny they even make the kit...

ZHooligan is obviously "connected", but as the letter instructs the favored few, he shouldn't be saying anything.
