Oil Level and sight glass

If you compare the owners manual versus the repair manual you will find that their is conflicting information regarding where the oil level should read.
The problem I'm having is, I put in approx. three quarts of oil from a gallon container. The glass is showing the oil level at a fraction below the top half of that stupid looking star implanted in the glass . I'm going for the max fill without overfilling. Do you think this will work. By the way I have the bike level and warmed it up.
TIA

How approximate is the 3 quarts you poured? You can put as much as 3 1/2 quarts without any problems.
To insure that I get exactly 3, Usually pour each quart into an old container.
I buy the Mobil1 by the gallon ($17 per) I prime the oil filter first then pour exactly 3 quarts afterwards. I may add up to 15 oz depending on the sight glass level.

I guess what I'm looking for is the exact location on the sight glass that the oil level should hit.

It should be in the middle of the sight glass or higher. I use a front and rear stand to keep the bike level.

On the 2000 (like mine) there are two lines, you keep it between the lines. I dunno what this star is you're talking about so I assume it's a 2002 thing.
Usually, if you can see oil somewhere in the middle of the sight glass on a motorcycle you're ok.
On my 2000, I go for exactly 3 quarts total. I usually have to wait until the next day to get an accurate reading, but I think they fixed that issue on later bikes.
So really, there probably is not a specific "level" that you are supposed to keep it at. Run it a little lower for more power, run it a little higher for more peace of mind, keep it in the sight glass.

Oh, now I know what you are talking about. I'm not sure what that thing is, but the lines are not actually on the glass. The lines are cast into the case next to the sight glass.
