The 1063 will work, it is longer than the 1070 but I would recommend the 1070 just because that is the filter for the 12.

i'v had three now. the stock kawa filter, another kawi filter that works too, and a fram. the fram was larger than the non-stock kawi filter i have now. i can find the #s if ya still need them. the fram was a 6017 or something like that.

Just to make it more confusing....

1. The 1070 is the standard filter for the 12R.
2. When the 12R was introduced, the 1063 was a KHI approved substitute since the 1070 filter wasn't available.
3. At that time, the 1063 filter was used on about 65% (or more) of all of KHI's products ranging from sportbikes, crusiers and ATVs.
4. The 1063 is slightly larger, but usually cost less then the 1070. When the 1070 was first introduced, the cost difference was quite a bit.
5. Here's the punch line... the 1063 has been DISCONTINUED! It has been replaced by the 1072 and can now be found on about 75% (or more) of KHI's products. Except the 12R of course.
7. To the best of my knowledge, KHI, like most of the other bike manufacturers, no longer use any kind of special "bypass valving" in their filters that is specific to any one make or model.
8. The only difference in their filters is size and that's due to some models space restrictions in the filter's location area. Something the 12R doesn't have a problem with.
9. For example, the 7R (which used the 1063, now the 1072) has it's filter located in the center front, between the #2 & #3 header. Still, the majority of the ZX line uses the 1072.

SO... it just boils down to how much you want to pay for your OEM filter. There is no "quality" or "filtration" difference between the various OEM filters. In over 15 oil changes, my 12R has seen only one 1070 filter. The one that came with it from the factory. I've always used the 1063 and now currently use the 1072.

bagster...

Check with your "stealer"... I mean your dealer. Odds are, that the 1072 will be cheaper then the 1070. Don't let him yank your chain about it the 1070 being specifically designed for the 12R and that anything else wouldn't work or void the warranty. Just remind him that KHI (not KMC) authorized the use of the 1063 on the 12R and that the 1063 has been superseed by the 1072.

My dealer freaked when they ordered about fifty 1063 filters and got a big box of 1072 filters. That's when they were told that the 1063 has been superseed by the 1072 and that the 1063 was no longer available.

I'm getting 1070 filters through Ron Ayers for $4.71 each. I order four at a time, and pay $7 shipping...Considering the stealer wants $11 a filter, I can't help but come out ahead.

As a rule I cut my filters open after use and let the pleats drain for a day for later inspection. You'd be amaized at the abount of metal that the filter catches. Not just on the zx12 either. Hondas, Suzukis, any engine for that matter. You can then buy an eye piece and identify the material that the pieces are from. If you are very intimate with a particular engine you can sometimes indetify where the metal came from.

Anyway, whan you take out the element you will see a rubber "foot" valve in the filter. Its not a bypass like some automotive and bike filters have. But its an anti drainback valve that keeps the oil above the valve from draining back to the sump when the engine is off. As far as how long it would take for the oil to drain back if you use a filter without this valve? Who knows?
I cant say if the 1063 or 1072 filters have this valve or not. Next time My buddy changes his oil in his 99 9r I'll cut his open. I've cut his filters before but never took notice weather it had the rubber "foot" valve or not.

In any case I dont think the oil will drain back in a few weeks time. But when doing the fall storage oil change and filter I would use the 1070 at least for that one time each year.
I hope you guys do, do your oil change BEFORE you put the bike in storage not first thing in the spring!!! ?? You should do the final oil change and then ride it once and put it away for the winter. This removes and then neturalizes the remaining acids that buildup from combustion contamination over time. The calcium does have a neutralization limit at which time it can no longer neutralize the corrosive acids that buildup.

oh, one thing. Cutting open your filters can often give you a clue as to whats going on in the engine. Sometimes you can prevent catastrophic engine failure by catching the signs before the "major" event happens.

If you do decide to do this I sugest buying an exhaust pipe cutter to do this. They are fairly cheep at an auto parts store and they work well. Using this type of cutter will not contaminate the filter with metal like a cutoff wheel or saw will.

my storage procedure

thanx for the info redelk.
i think my next filter will be the 1072.

as for storage Y2KZX12R,
my first winterization I actually rinsed the engine out with one ten minute warmup cycle of cheap oil to remove acids and crud before adding the final storage oil with a new 1070 filter.
