Go out and ride, and follow Kaw's recomendations. Try not to freeze your ass of in Jersey when you ride this winter.

Everybody has there own break-in ideas, including Kawasaki. I'm no different. I bought my bike April 1st 1999 when they first came available. I picked it up from a dealer some 500 miles away in the southern part of New Mexico.
I flew down to the dealership and picked up the bike. I took it real easy the first 25 miles and let it completely cool down after riding it. I then hopped on the bike and rode it another 50 miles and did some easy and brief roll ons to about 5,000 RPMs and then let it cool completely down. By this time I was entering the mountains around Ruidoso where I did a few roll ons to 6,000 RPM's. Always brief, never full throttle, and aways watching the engine temp. I let it cool off again at about 100 miles. I kept doing this until I reached Santa Fe about 300 miles from where I started.
I spent the night there and started on the final leg home the next morning. When I got home I had 500 miles on the bike and I changed oil with Mobil MX4T oil. I considered the bike broke in at that point and it was red line city ever since then. I now have 31,000 miles on the bike and have never had any kind of internal problem (knock on wood). I change the oil frequently and demand top performance from it every time I ride it. The bike runs fucking great and I expect a lot more miles from it.
I have broke in every bike I have ever owned in less than 500 miles using simular procedures. Thats been 15 new bikes in 30+ years of riding, never having had a break in related failure.
Just my method of breaking the bike in, and since it was my money that bought the bike...

I use basically the same procedure as OKD. I heat cycle it and don't run it at a steady speed constantly varying the rpm running it up and backing out of it very gently at the beginning as more miles accumulate I run it a little harder and increase the rpm's I take it up to.I think I had about 5-600 miles on the first time I redlined it in a lower gear. My bike was dynoed at 820 miles and had 156.2.I changed oil only(Couldn't buy an oil filter yet, none available) at 400 miles and oil and filter at 800.Started running mobile MX4T at just over 5000 miles.I change my filter every time I change my oil 2,000-5000 miles between oil changes.More trips to the drag strip = oil change sooner.I never run it above WFO!

It'll GO or it'll BLOW........Ride the fuckin' thing !!!!!
I've pretty much rode the fuck out of mine since day one. I "Tried" to keep it under control but I couldn't resist hammering on it. I didn't do anything that I would consider harsh, I just more or less tried to be somewhat gentle for a couple hundred miles and then after that it's been fuckin' rock 'n roll. I switched over to synthetic oil at 1000 miles and have flogged her for 7000 miles with nary a wimper. I seems to run better everytime I get on it. I love this damned bike.

Revised Break-in period.......
was Kawasaki's way of somewhat controlling the utter mayham that the Zx-12r would otherwise impose on the public by not having bikes get tossed this way, and tossed that way. It allows the rider to become used to the bike.
A local dealer selling Suzuki's had everyone of the 600's and lots of 750's comeback for road-rash repair. For the most part they where all tossed over backwards at speed or lowsided.

Ted/Death - As it gets colder less people show. Last week it rained, but the week before last, there were a couple hundred bikes, 10/15% Jap bikes. I'm there every Wed. (if no rain/snow), even in winter. I've been there with three wings in the dead of winter.
