AMA riders banned from WSB Laguna! World Superbike officials are demanding that American wild card riders pick between racing World Superbike or AMA Superbike this weekend at Laguna Seca, and can't do both.
According to World Superbike officials, regular World Superbike series teams have complained that American wild cards participating in AMA Superbike practice, qualifying and racing this weekend constitutes extra testing as prohibited by World Superbike regulations.
World Superbike Race Director Roberto Nosetto dropped this bombshell on race promoters RPM at about 6:05 p.m. Pacific Time Thursday and was not concerned that AMA riders have competed in World Superbike and AMA races every year since World Superbike came to Laguna Seca.
"We have to live with our regular teams all year," said Nosetto, who interrupted a discussion between an American reporter and an RPM official to deliver the bombshell.

Although published reports stated that World Superbike Race Director Roberto Nossetto and SBK International were forcing the AMA Wild Cards to pick one series or the other this weekend at Laguna Seca, acting AMA Operations Manager Gary Mathers says the AMA stars will indeed race in both AMA and WSC, albeit with very limited track time.
Mathers attended the Wild Card meeting held last evening and -- despite hard lobbying by the AMA riders and officials that the AMA riders voluntarily sit out half the sessions like Eric Botrom and Doug Chandler did last year -- says it was determined the Wild Cards can't take place in any sessions except qualifying. This reverses SBK International's earlier decision to allow the AMA stars to ride in practice, but spend half of all the WSC sessions on the pit wall, Mathers says.
That leaves the AMA riders to shake down and set up their WSC machines in a qualifying session. Many AMA insiders feel this pushes the safety envelope, since they will undoubtedly be off the pace at least some of the session since, in most cases, the National riders' World bikes have yet to turn a wheel in anger this weekend.
Where do Mark Miller and Eric Bostrom fit in the situation? Miller can ride in any WSC session, since he is not racing in AMA Superbike this weekend. Bostrom's status is currently undetermined, according to Mathers.
So why all the debate and drama? It seems some of the WSC teams -- allegedly the oneson the back end of the points --have pressured SBK International to severely limit the track time of the AMA guys. That begs the question: If the WSC guys think the AMA guys aren't capable of beating the Benelli, then what are they so worried about?
