Can one install a 02/03 ECU into an 04/05 harness?
First off hello to all.
This is my first post but I'm in kind of a jam. I've purchased a 2005 motor kit and installed it into a Banshee framed quad. The harness I purchased was later found to have an ECM that would not ground internally (BAD). When I went to give Kawasaki the part number off the ECM (21175-1089) they informed me that the ECM was from an 02/03 harness. My question is this. Will a 21175-0038 ECM out of an 04/05 bike plug in and work correctly without modification to the harness?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Rich.
P.S. is there anybody here who has the ability to diagnose and repair these ECU's?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your screwed
First the 2005 ECU is a totally different animal from the 2002. For instance your engine has a 24(?) tooth ignition wheel on the end of the crank while the 2002 has an 8 tooth wheel. Also I believe the 05 has a secondary butterfly servo in the throttle bodies which the 02 does not. Those are just the two that I can think of off the top of my head. There may be other problems with the type of sensors used.
So even if you checked every part plugged into the harness and fixed those problems, bought the 8 tooth wheel and stuck it on the crank, and removed the butterflies there is still your damaged ECU.
Second I think I can safely say without contradiction that I am probably the resident expert on the 21175-1089 and if any one could diagnose and fix one it would be me. But even if I could fix it I don't see it doing you any good with your 2005 engine and the actual chance of fixing it are not good. "..will not ground internally" sounds like one or more blown coil/injector driver transistors. Can you be more specific as to how that was determined?
Still I think your going to have to bite the bullet and get yourself an 05 harness / ecu

ridgeracer,
Thanks for the reply. After looking further at the crank it's got 8 teeth so I guess I've got a 02/03 motor. Was told it was an 05 when I bought it but oh well. Does anybody have an 02/03 1089 ECU for sale?
Thanks
Rich.

I just bought a new 21175-1089 from Babbitts online for $600, the kawi dealer wanted $715
For used ones your best bet is ebay.
