This user's post is wrong!! ... NEVER do this with an 00 or 01 ZX12 !... you WILL crack your front fender...

... edited by admin to save member's fenders!

I ran my front tire right up against the front of the bed, and tied her down tight. I never had any problems at all with it.

Really? Because the fender sticks out past the tire. If you push it up to a vertical wall, the fender will be the first thing to hit.

Hey Wildman,

I needed a spacer with my 2000, but the 2002's fender is cut back a little more so I don't need one with it.

I guess the answer is "it depends".

It would also depend on the lip of the particular truck, they're not all cut the same.

I put a block of wood in front of the front tire as to not crack the fender... DONT LISTEN TO zx11_12... HE'S WRONG! the fender does infact stick out past the front tire and will crack if you ram it into the front of the truck with no wheel block

...um...maybe zx11_12 meant "secure (as in bolt/wedge/glue/nail/weld,etc.) a block of wood "X" amount of inches from the front wall to keep the front tire/fender from making contact with the wall..."?...meaning that the block will act as a stop "X" amount of inches from the wall?...I dunno, just guessin'

fish,

I think jason has an '02 so the fender is cut back more and the tire sticks out. You're right on the 00-01's. The best thing to do is to roll it close and look, like I said above some trucks have a lip that may screw up the fit.

I brought my 2002 black/gold home from Chaparral in the back of my Dakota. Make no mistake, I did not use a spacer of any kind. I pushed the tire up against the front of the bed, connect the soft ties, and cinched her down tight. If anyone doubts it, I can go put it into the back of my truck and take a picture of it for you. Of course, for me to go through the trouble of doing that, there's going to have to be some sort of bet involved where I can benefit from someone's doubt.

They changed the front fender for the 2002 model, so the answer to the question would be "that depends on which year you have." Since he bought a 2002, I would say he does not need a spacer.

'02 doesn't need spacer. I tote mine in an 83 s-10 (383) and the tire hits before the fender. New for '02!

Back to answering the question. Put your wood spacer between the tire and the truck bed wall. Use soft ties around the grips or a canyon dancer harness. Personally the canyon dancer is a bit over rated and the sodt ties work fine at about 4.95 a set.

Hook your tie downs to the soft ties and to the truck. Snug the bike down fairly tight, keep the front wheel straight and obviously as straight vertical as possible. You will not hurt your forks! Some guys like to make an attachment towards the back of the bike as well. Over rated in my opinion. I have transported bikes hundreds of thousands of miles with out doing this.

In the future do yourself a favor and buy the sport chalk posted by Swft. I introduced it to Swft. It is the best and easiest way to transport the bike. But soft ties will do just fine.

Yah, you just roll the bike in, and the chock clamps down on the tire. A couple soft ties to keep the bike from rocking too much side to side, and you are done!

At least the 12 will fit in a pick up! I have heard that Chevy and Ford will void the warranty if a person is caught trying to haul an oversized / over weight load like a Busa or TLR!!

I've always used trailers to move my bikes around, but I plan on putting them (one at a time, anyway) on the back of my Tundra ext cab short bed. Do you drive the bikes up on a special ramp, or do you enlist several buddies to lift the bike up on the bed?

ok this is what i've come up with so far and this is what i bought:

RAMP CHAMP made by highland. you can buy one for 94 bucks on jcwhitney.com and various other fugazy sites as well

1) it collapses as small as 66 inches (which should fit in any truck bed) and expands up to eight feet

2), its a durable plastic so it wont rust and it holds a 750 lbs capacity.

i think that 100 bucks is better investment and a hella lot less hassle than buying and hauling around a trailer.

jason370,

Is the ramp wide enough that you can put both feet down while driving the bike up the ramp? I've seen those really narrow ramps that are only as wide as a tire, but I would be a little nervous driving a bike up a 'steep' ramp knowing that I couldn't put my feet down in case things got hairy...

...poor mans fix for front fender clearance on 00' & 01' (not 02'!)

Grab your average bag of lawn feed/fertilizer/whatever (that size bag) & stuff it in front of the front tire. Bingo, bag is forced against the truck cab, leaving enough space to tie the bike down without hitting the fender, & the tire is firmly held by the bag.

I later took the bag & filled it with sand (making a "sandbag"), & used that; it works just fine& dandy. It's not as elegant as Swft's "Chock" (I'd like one of those too!), but it does work, & it's cheap (as in free/I found fertilizer bag in the wifies outdoor garden cabinet...she'll kill me when she finds out....LOL.)
