Lightweight oil
Book calls for 10W40 for the most part. I've run 5W40 and I think 5W30 but can't remember for sure.
Been really eyeing the 0W10 and 0W30. Thinking about picking up 2 of the 10 and 1 of the 30....should yield:
0W17ish
Anyone ever used the lightweight stuff? Looking to use it for TX Mile and Maxton only....yay or nay?
I'd rather not hear from people who say "You'll be fine" if they don't know....likewise, I'd rather not here from people saying I'll end up w/metal shavings when I do an oil change...if not worst if they don't know either.
Looking to hear from those that HAVE used lightweight oil similar to or just like this sorta stuff. I do remember Bergie saying he used the 30 @ Maxton and couldn't really tell the diff from that and the 40....but wanted to see who's used the stuff even lighter!
Thanks
A.

Ship,
Check with Brock. I think he has the most extensive experience with 0W oil. He recommends Alisyn and has the info to support it use. Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Red

Ali,
I used 0/10 full synthetic one week-end at Maxton years ago. Me and the boys made 7 or 8 passes each, something over twenty runs. The bike had 8,000 miles on it and now has 30,000 with no sign of damage.
Did it help? I dunno........but it did't hurt and we all broke 200 that week-end!
If you do go with the light weight stuff just don't let the bike idle any more than you have too.

Dan, thanks! You have no idea how important that info was! I'll have almost 12k on the motor next maxton meet.
With the air shifter, better aeros/tuck, some weight off....and slowly upping the nos w/more fuel conservatively....I would be ecstatic if I hit 207s like your sons did....205 and I'm a happy camper. And don't worry, I never let the bike idle too long, always trying to keep the temps down....ask Al the starter...he gets pissed if I take 15 seconds too long warming it up & getting my gloves on!
Looks like Maxima makes a 0W10...I'll have to give it a try....I respect Brock's 2 cents so I'll drop him a line too to see what he says....
Thanks!

Ali, Dan is the Man on this subject, but I think anything under 20 wt is SERIOUSLY tanking an Expensive Chance! If you find a STRAIGHT 20 wt you are better off than 0 w 20 or 0 w 10

I don't think it's worth the chance unless you've got a record on the line and you are oh-so-close.

SInce you are not rich, I would SERIOUSLY Listen to DM.
It cost me a year of time to recover from my Disaster. I thought I had money to cover everything BUT something totally unexpected took $4,500 and I have "just" started putting the bike back together

Hey Vincent,
Doug's reply got me thinking (and my head still hurts).
What if you'd had 0/10w in your bike when you ran 199.xxx, you might have broke the 200 barrier.........or your motor. :-)

On that day, other things were Broke! #1, the Wet side of the system did not work so I plugged it and added fuel to the PC.
#2, the NOS Button Broke and I had to re-wire the nos to the 100% switch and never thought about not arming the susyem until I hit 3rd gear and was in the NOS from the Start Line. Of course between cooling the Bottle and accel using 90% throttle to keep out of the NOS I WAS LUCKY to reach 199.5.
Nothing would have saved me that day because if I had another run something else would have just gone wrong!
I thought working on the Turbo ZRX was where your head hurt from because that took a Lot of thinking!!

Yep, Mr. Hill I always feel a little guilty when I have some good BBQ and Tex-Mex the day before a run. If I wouldn't have eaten that then my tuck would have been better!
No worries Shiphteey, I think you'll get that 1200cc nos record In Texas this time.
You never know, the secret might be a little Tex-Mex gas that made that fat old guy go 195.74..........................So be sure and drop in early on Friday so Entropy and the Bikeland gang can direct you to the right spot!
