Err, is that in Kilometers, Slug?

I reset my trip meter every time I fill up, and I've never gotten more than 160 out of a tank, and that was when it was nearly empty. Considering a 5.0 gallon tank, that would be over 30 mpg. I almost never get over 7k rpms, and rarely hit redline. Most of my riding is steady state commuting on the freeway at 4k rpms.

If you're getting 200+ miles from a tank, my hat's off to you.

Range?

Best I've done was 271 km (168 miles) on one tank. The last bar had been blinking for 30 km. -ZXtra

Best run was 166 miles on 4.8 gallons, I don't want to do that again. Worst was 50 miles on about 4 gallons during a track day.

Slug has a Yamaha 600, I guess you weren't specific about what the tank was on.

My 12 usually gets 178 miles before it flashes (185 today) and that is 4.3 gallons. You would be surprised how often it starts flashing at 178. That is mostly twisty roads steep hills and in town, along with some freeway. Just crusing down the freeway I get over 50 mpg.

The reason Slug gets that kind of milage is due to the tow rope I always carry to drag his slow 600 ass along. That would also account for me filling at 200km.

If under 120 KPH(75MPH) I get something like 330km(=205miles) if riding country road. When speeds go up to 160-200KPH(100-125MPH) it drops to 280km(=175miles). I usually ride until I got only 1-2 liters(half of gallon) left. It's especially easy in German Highways because they post the kilometersigns to next gas station. So You are just calculating the mileage and miles to next station. My best is 338km(=210miles) but then I rolled tank empty to the station. I think that the biggest reason why some of You get much poorer mileage is that You don't fill the tank to full - it takes a lot of gas after it seems to full - I always top it as far as I can. Also if You are riding very fast or at the track - your mileage drops. When I was doing some top end runs on German highway I got only 200km(=125miles) with 19 liters!

now this is a point that interest me as i have seen way too many discrepancies about fuel. first off, i have often filled my tank to the point where even with the bike straight up and down i squeeze some fuel out when i close the cap. so i dont htink i can fit more. but that only gets me 18liters, even when i stalled for the 5th time pulling into the station (yes, it happened). normally i fill about 15 or 16 liters. that gets me about 180km. now up to last year i got much better mileage. the guage started blinking at 230km almost like clockwork. so that was only like 15 liters. this year i'v gotten as low as 140km at the same point. now last year i almost always cruised around 3000rpm. lots of pretty simple highway cruising. this year i normally cruise at 4000+, and have spent much more time at 5000+ than before. i'm just surprised that a 1000 to 2000rpm diff can make such a huge diff. thought it may be cause of an unhapyp engine, but just has the big service done and everything checked out fine. go figure.

I always get at least 160 miles before I consider re-fueling. That would be a mixed ride town/city/highway speeds. If all highway riding I go around 185~ miles before re-fueling. Once on a trip back home from New Hampshire I got 203 miles before re-fueling (lots of downgrade riding though). All and all I'm happy with the 12 except for when I got riding with my wife and her zx9r. She fills up 1 once to my 2 times

My Bike Must Be Really Thisty!?!?

My last bar starts flashing somewhere around 120 miles and I've run out of gas at 155 miles before. My bike rarely sees anything below 3500 rpms.

Box stock, I had gotten upwards of 160. My 1270 never got much over 120 miles. My 1347 got upwards of 140. Weird, huh?

In the Service Manual: Fuel Tank Capacity: 20L or 5.3 US Gallons

I've never run out, but put in $10 the other day (4.7gal) when I got too far from a gas station. I was at the last bar.

I've heard running injected engines out of gas is bad for them (sudden leaness); I have no data to back that up. Anyone?

Are these gas numbers with the stock can or modified can. Because I had the same discrepancy issues when I had the 2000 bike. I changed the pipe to muzzy full exhaust and I was rarely getting 90 miles out of a full tank of gas. I am not that aggressive a rider. (I have my moments though)and even when I just took it easy it never got any better.

I will be picking up my 2002 soon. I'm definitely going to do a comparison between the stock and full exhaust.

My bike's a 00', stock with K&N's & Akrapovic Evo system...

Most of my rides are 2/3rd gear twisties, "Pace" riding. I get about 120miles per tank, head for a gas station when I get to the last few bars (mileage got slightly worse w/Akra, no change noted w/K&N's.)

A top of 6th gear run greatly decreases mileage. You can almost watch the guage drop fast as you ride (if you were looking.) I almost ran out this way a few times; I got on the road I had a half tank, did a high speed run the next 30 miles & the next time I looked down the warning flasher was flashing. :

We have covered this subject before, I think a couple of reasons I get such good mileage is because of the altitude(4500-8000) and I still have a (mostly) stock pipe. Most of my rides are half 2nd gear nasty twisties (like the truck route down the back side of Virginia City). The other half might be the freeway getting to the road. And on the freeway here and in California the armed meter mollies are brutal, gassing it is mostly out of the question. Sometimes you have to drive a long way to get away from those low lifes. There is an awesome road to lake Tahoe called Kingsbury Grade and I have not been up it in the last few years where I haven't seen at least 3 armed meter mollies in the short 10 miles. Isn't there like a donut shop that needs protecting???

I know, & to further succeed in their meter maid madness, not only did the CHP get radar recently, but they just got FIFTY (50) new pursuit Camero's that do 165.
