Oil Leak Has Returned.......

I recently posted that I had repaired the oil leak on my bike. (the one involving the wire harness that goes into the stator cover) Well it has resurfaced and I'm a little frustrated by it. I did a good job of cleaning everything with contact cleaner, and was pretty confident that I sealed everything up with the silicone.I sealed (so I thought) both ends of the harness. I took the bike out last weekend and it never leaked a drop.

I went for about a 125 mile ride yesterday and when I stopped to take a breather I a bunch of damned oil on my hugger and swingarm. It kinda fucked my ride up, because until then I was having a great time. I wiped the bike down real good before I continued the ride. I rode probably another 35 or 40 miles before I got home and didn't cut the bike any slack. I was flogging it pretty hard and it never leaked out another drop of oil. WTF????

At the Gap trip in May it leaked the first couple of days then stopped and never did it again until I got back home. I HATE fuggin' oil leaks and am tired of messing with this crap. Has anybody came up with a safe way to vent the crankcase on their 12???

what is your oil level.......Mine never did it until I accidently fille the site glass full. Prior to that i always kept half a glass. Now I leak.........!!! i have been thinking about taking an air blow gun and reversing the flow and then cutting open the wire wrap to release the tube effect.
I think the thing has created a vaccume of it own?!

Ragedy MF

I used permatex ultra black silicone on the harness. It's great stuff and I have always had good luck with it.

I keep my sight glass at about 2 thirds full. I never run it any higher than that. I just can't figure out why it will leak sometimes, and then other times it won't leak a drop?????? I just want to fix it and forget about it. I HATE oil leaks.........ON ANYTHING!!!!!!!

I had that happen to me last weekend. Freaked me out. I was ridding with a few of my buddies and some people we had met from St. Louis. We were running the bikes hard. Ruined my weekend and I went home to check it out.

I started reading the boards a bit and found your prior post on this matter and how, I think it was Y2K, talked about sealing it with RTV.

When I pulled the sheath out from the boot that goes into the stator, I would guess anywhere from 7 to 10 cc's of oil ran out of the sheath. I took everything apart and cleaned it real good. I then put the RTV in the sheath and in the boot and put them back together. I let it set and cure for 24 hours. I've not run the bike very hard since then, but I've noticed NO leaks either.

I never had this problem before. I am guessing, that the bike was pushing a little oil up the wire for quite some time and just finally go to the point were it let go. 10 cc's is a lot of oil to have in a sheath.

Eric,
I hope your leak doesn't resurface like mine. Seeing all that oil leaking out of your bike will bum you out pretty quick.

I thought it was just me! I notice a very smalll amount of oil coming from under the chain guard near the rear sprocket. Kinda bothers me! It just started this after my last oil change. I don't run my oil very hight in the glass.

Does the.....

I wonder if for some reason the Kleen Air mod has anything to do with this. Has everyone that is having this problem done the mod???? I think I read somewhere that the Kleen Air mod had nothing to do with it, but I'm not sure. I'm just curious about it.

I've got the muzzy Block off plates on my with the Kleen air removed.

I think this problem relates to the crank case vent not the Kleen air system. I haven't checked mine yet, but you might just verify that the crank case vent tube isn't pinched or kinked in any way.

If memory serves, it's around (behind) the front sprocket and runs up to the air box. Let me see if I can find some pics and I'll come back and edit this post to put them in.

See the "pipe" right above and behind where the sprocket would be...that's where the hose connects.

Here is a pic of the hose. The hose goes down in that little clearing between the frame and the fuel overflow catch.

Hope this helps

As I said before, it's just a possibility that I thought of. I pulled my motor out (took these pics to help me remember where things go, along with the manual) to adjust my valves. But, a pinched hose is always one of the first things to check.

my piece of shit leaks too!!

Howdy Rick,
Ted here, long time no talk huh? Hey mine had that same leak last year during the spring (gap 1) trip. Horsepower and others told me about the silicone trick so when I got home I took the damn thing appart cleaned her up real good gooped some ultra black on and had no leak for a long time. I went to gap2 and it did great. Then this spring it was ok but as soon as the temperatures got over 90 degrees out it was back leaking. just a little mind you and not most of the time but on some days it does. There seems to be no real pattern. If I ride hard it sometimes leaks and sometimes doesn't and if I take it easy it sometimes leaks and sometimes doesn't. I do have a different oil then last year. I am using Silkolene's full race synthetic 15w50. I keep my oil level only about 1 third of the sight glass. As for clean air mods I have not done that to mine. The engine is completely stock except that I cut the catalytic converter out and put the stock exhaust can back on with no drilling or mods. I hate leaks!!! It makes it harder to give the harley assholes shit when mine leaks too[ ] I would love to solve this so if you all figure it out I will fix mine too.
Ted

What up Ted !!!!

Man you're definitely in the same boat as me. No real pattern to the leak at all. I am going to try and come up with a definite fix. I can't have a goddamned bike that leaks oil, it's against my religion. I hate oil leaks period.

Can you imagine the grief if a bunch of Harley riders saw me wiping oil off the 12 at a gas stop???!!!???

When, and if I come up with something I will post the details about it.
