making your own carbon fiber?

anyone ever done or tried this? I'm just curious how hard it is and what the results are like. I've read a little about resins and I'm thinking about giving it a shot....

I'm not sure what the differences are between forming fiberglass and carbon fiber. I have a buddy that does pretty well with fiberglass. I haven't watched him do it but I know that he makes forms and molds with plastic film, small garbage bags, foam rubber and sometimes that expanding foam that is sold in home centers for weather proofing. I think he mentioned using modeling clay, also. Basically, you can carve out a form with foam rubber or clay, place plastic wrap over it (so the resin doesn't stick) and start laying up your fiberglass. If you stick a small garbage bag into a compartment or inner spaces and shoot that expanding foam in there, it takes the shape of whatever it's in. Beware that some types of expanding foam can exert significant pressure when confined. It also sticks to everything. I could get into this more so e-mail me if you need more info. kawboy@aeroinc.net I used to be pretty good with fiberglass when I was a bodyman.

I was under the impression that carbon fiber had to be baked in a pressurized oven (an autoclave). -ZXtra

There's lots of good articles about it on the net.. just search around.

But here's what I know..

Basically fiberglass is usually it's base.. then sheets of soft carbon fiber stuff get layed on top of it. For the look and strength. sorta..

Also.. the molds must be good quality as with anything.

And the more you work with it the better you become.
There is a lot of waiting involved. You have to be very very patient which I am not.

Part of my job at the acft repair facility I use to work at was working on composites. There are many different types of resins and that is what may or may not require heat. The fiberglas or carbon fibre is impregnated with the type of resin you are using then laid up in a mold. I reworked mostly various flight controls by removing damaged/delaminated areas and repairing as required by the particular aircrafts SRM (structural repair manual).Carbon fibre is very expensive as are the resins.I have had lots of training/experience working composites but not in fabricating new parts. In my opinion it is better and more economical to pay someone who is an expert in that area.Hans has the highest quality carbon fibre parts I have seen produced for bikes. I am not compensated in any any for saying that. All the carbon fibre parts I have on my bike are made by Hans.

Thanks guys.
Harry-thanks, I was curious how hard it was (obviously if it was easy we'd all be doing it). I was looking for a way to shed some unsprung weight and I thought it'd be kinda fun to make my own stuff
