Storage luggage for the 12 ??

So what does everyone use for tank bags for their 12? Do you use the luggage with straps that attach around your tank? Or the luggage with magnets that just cling to your tank?

Pictures are also welcome...come on, show off your tank bag!

luggage

The tank is plastic so magnets are out. I enjoy a strap on now and then (tank bag that is!)

Beans, those are Nelson-Riggs bags. The tank bag is non-magnetic with a nice pad underneath. The bags held on by a strap around the steering neck and one off of the back. I routed the back one down and under the seat to a frame member. Works like a champ. The bag expands like a mo-fo too.

I recall somebody strategically siliconed a bit of 1/8 inch sheet metal pieces(2 in X 2 in) inside the tank cover and their tankbag stayed just fine. Worth a try.

Which model of the Nelson Rigg luggage do you have on your gas tank?

Does it ever slip off? Or is it very stable?

Is there anything you dont like about it?

I use a tourmaster cortech bag (sorry, don't remember the number offhand) that has 4 bungee hooks. I set it on the rear seat and hook it to the 4 pegs. If you have a passenger it's obviously not going to work for you, but if you ride solo a lot having the bag out of the way behind you is much nicer, imho, especially when it's full.

I did do a couple of mods to it though to make it work better. I shortened all the bungee straps by 3" on each side to make the hooks fit more snugly. I also took off the foam pad with velcro that came on the bottom of the bag. I cut it in half, flipped each one 180 degrees, and punched 2 holes in each one to place over the pegs where the hooks go. That way the velcro still works to hold the bag in place as a backup, the hooks are all very tight, but the only thing touching my paint is the thick foam rubber (think wetsuit material). It is very stable, because most of the wind blast is blocked by your body.

I'll try to take a few pics after class tonight if you want to see them.

SCOOTER!!!

What brand duffel bag are you using on the RED tail? Cost? Where did you buy it from? Are you keeping your sleeping bag inside of it? I'm looking for a round or semi-round bag to store my sleeping bag and keep things nice, tight, and tidy back there. Thanks!

Here's a pic of my bag:

It's a bit bigger than most tail bags, which is nice. I'll take some pics of my actual setup tonight for yas.

Nah...I didn't overlook it, it wasn't taken the wrong way, you didn't understand my question, and you're not a bad boy, ok?

But, Tim!...does that cortech bag open wide at the top?...enough to stuff a rolled-up 3-season sleeping bag inside?...or do I have to stuff it in loose? Thanks, guys!

Some more info. about the bag above. It's a Tourmaster brand...matches my jacket. It's made of super heavy duty material with really good zippers, and nice reflective stuff on the 3 visible sides.

I snagged this from their website, but I bought mine from Chaparral for about $85 (I think) and it came with the raincover included. Once I did the mods to the base, I was thrilled with it. It doesn't touch anything but seat and pegs, and you couldn't pull it off with both hands if you tried.

Depending on the bag, I think it could probably swallow it rolled up. It'd have to be one of the higher quality ones though I think...the ones that normally stuff into a bag. The bag is here at work, and I measured the main opening. It's 12"x8", so a fully rolled big bag isn't gonna fit into the opening. However, the newer types should.

I usually carry my LD's for school, a full sized Penal Code, a laptop, and other junk in the main compartment. I carry a half-bike cover (covers from the air intake to the license plate and above) in one side pocket, and whatever in the other. Not to mention all kinds of other crap I carry with me all the time like a cell phone, Palm pilot, leatherman tool, etc. It'll fit a bunch of shite.

Nano, if we hook up for a ride soon, I can show you my rig. I replied to your IM's, but I was uh, indisposed when you sent them earlier...I was checking out some, uh, research sites. (Actually, I'm at work, and was actually doing some work when you sent them, believe it or not. )

I'll still snap some pics when I get home for ya beansie. My bike has 2 coats of Zaino on it already, and I pulled the Kawasaki puffy-letter decals off the tank. (Since I haven't been able to ride for the last week, my bike has gotten some attention.) I also received a Kriss headlight modulator I'll be installing tonight, so I'll definitely get some pics up once I'm done with all that.

Here's the description of the bag I snagged from their website:

quote:
Size: Tailbag

2100 cu. 17.5"(L) x 12"(W) x 10"(H) (30 ltr.)

(Copy the desired part number and present it to your Tour Master dealer for ordering purposes or place your order below)

Qty Part # Description Price
82-411 CORTECH TAILBAG $89.99
82-495 CORTECH TAILBAG RAINCOVER $9.99

Why are you taking the Kawasaki logo off of your bike? Just curious.

I took off the puffy letter decals because to me they cheapened up the look of the bike. They were the only thing on the bike that was flat gray colored. Also, putting Zaino on the tank is a lot easier if you don't have to worry about all the stupid little letters.

I figure most people know who makes a ZX-12, and if they don't, I don't think it's really gonna matter to them who makes the bike. The windscreen still says Kawasaki, the triple clamp still says Kawasaki, and I'm sure I can find other places that still do.

I just think the tank looks much sexier without all the pressed on rubber letters...your mileage may vary.

Duffel is a el-cheapo from Dunham's Sports(Chain store) it's 12 X 24 if I remember right. 'Bout $12 tops. Should find 'em at Wal Mart etc. Just lay the bungies under the pegs and hook over the top. Holds a sleeping bag, rainsuit, winter gloves and a few other odds n ends. Use a garbage bag on the inside to waterproof it. The blue thing on the Red(Dad's) 12 is a 7x7 pup tent. Ran 'em up to 140+ trying to ... no, make that outrunning , a storm/tornado in South Dakota. No problems.

There's more pics on the webshots link above. Look under "Bike Trip..."

Oh, Full zipper, sleeping bag fits rolled up.

Hey!

Thanks, Scooter....I have the Eclipse Sportbike Saddlepack and a Vetura Sportrack system...real clean combo, nice and tight...I just neede a bag to stow my sleeping bag without it looking like I just piled it on. Tight set-up = better aeros = better gas milage

Would you believe that I have a 2-man tent, a mummy mattress, and a camping pillow in one saddlebag? ...and the trunk and other saddle bag hold the rest of my stuff (1-week's worth of clothing, other gear + running shoes!) ...gotta pack lightly and creatively, tho ...the Ventura's rear tray holds the sleeping bag perfectly and I can lash a folding camping chair (250lb capacity!) across the saddlebags between the trunk and my back, but NOTHING touches my back ...the better to move around in the saddle when the road gets twisty ...is Laguna Seca here yet??????
