what are the best tires?

i know this monster eats tires like i eat oreos, but what tire will heat up the fastest, provide great grip and last about as long as the majority of tires that would end up on a zx12?

there are a number of threds on this topic. do a search for them. but i think the short answer would be the 010's. the M1's are the shit right now but the jury is out on longevity.

I'm a mild 'sportin' STREET rider'...no darkies, no wheelies, no stoppies, no knee-draggin', no drag racin'...jus' slow to fast and smooth (as smooth as I can be, anyway ) street riding and touring (yes, TOURING)...good smooth roads, mild to somewhat abrasive surfaces...straights and curves (decreasing AND increasing radius types)...I weigh 275 suited up and carry ~50lbs of camping gear/clothing on the bike when touring...SO...with that being said, I like how the 010s feel and wear...$200~$210 for the pair....I'm on my third pair, looking to get a good 6000miles from the rears and 6000~8000miles from the fronts...38psi on both...1500miles on the 207s=noticable wear...1500miles on the 010s=looks used but no noticable wear...just some input for you to chew on....

I'm still running stock on my 12...dont plan on upgrading till these are done with.

But I was big into Metzler tires with my previous Ninja. Are Metzlers as good as they used to be, or are the Bridgestones pretty mich still the best in everyone's opinion.

Tires

I chewed through the stock tires in 2900 miles (including the first 1000 mile break in) . I replaced them with BT010's I have never been a big dunlop fan but I have run out several pairs of BT010's and BT 045's on other sport bikes and loved em. The dunlop stockers were pretty predictable but seemed a bit soft to me. I left most of them in Deals Gap last month. This is the first bike I could really spin up on corner exits at will. Talk about a hard-on, Sliding the ass end out right into a little wheelie, oh,oh,oh pass the kleenx please.

That description was so wonderfully written that it brought a tear to my eye, along with warm feelings into my already awe-inspired warm filled heart.

The stock tires are 200's...is that what everyone else keeps on their bike or do you go bigger and fatter? I want fatter, but I dont want to compromise anything.

Tires are really your personal preference. I like the predictability of the Dunlop, I really like the Pirelli's as well. The Bridgestones seem reliable and a lot of guys have picked them. Of course I tend to believe the price of the Bridgestone draws people as well. I have not tried the new Metzler.

The Michelin is my least favorite. Take longer to warm up, the difference between sticking to the road and sliding out comes without warning. And all this for more money. Also in my case I have had two Michelin front tires cupped badly. Only tires to do that on me.

I am surprised no one thought of this. If you are a average to aggressive rider (not racer) . Drop down to a 190 rear (which should also Improve handling) and run the BTO-20's. Simulair to the 10's except for the harder coumpond in the middle. They are the same price as the 10's, And if you guys are getting 6,000 out of the 10's you should get at least 7,500 out of the 20's

Just burned through a Metzler Rennsport in about 700 miles. It is an awesome tire though. On the corners where I used to leave blackies the Rennsport stuck like a gummie. I figured it to cost over 24 cents per mile, however. Can't afford that for everyday use so I'm going to a Metzler M1 next. I do enjoy the predictable slides of the Dunlop 207. If the M1 doesn't cut it I'm going with the ever popular (on this board anyway) Bridgestones 010s.

700 miles! Damn I got over 5,000 miles on my rennsports. A lot of straight line highway miles though. I try not to spin my tires too. If your spinning, your losing mindset I guess.

Actually, I am a very aggressive rider,I ride my 12 both on the track and street. And I run a 180 on the rear for better handling. I have ran the 200, a 190 and the 180 and I like the 180. The 200 is for looks.

beansbaxter, u cant go fatter that i know of. anything fatter would be those 230 and 240 section tires made for boss hosses and the like. they have a very flat profile, woudlnt turn for shit, and likely would fit the 12 without a custom swingarm anyhow. 190's are proving very popular on this board. 180s less so, but there are those that like them, particularly those who spend time on the track. who wants to pay the huge premium for a 200 anyhow?

as to the 020s, i think they wouldnt have enough grip for anyone who rides even a little aggressively. if u do alot of striahgt highway miles tho, would make sense.

No need to be confused Jason. Tire choice is something that you have to figure out for yourself. Personally, I like the 010's. Went through several sets of the 207's cause I liked them too but after a few people starting talking about the 010's I thought I'd try them cause they are dual compound and I LOVE EM'. I will not go with anything else, for a while anyway.

Try them, if you don't like them then try another kind. I did hear from some people that the 208's were shit and many took them off their 02' 12's before they were even spent they hated them so much.

tires

what tire? what size? well all i can tell ya is try the ones that the fellas are running, and see what ya like, then stick to it. I am the oddball, most of the fellas are running bt010's or pilots, and a few 207's. I liked the 208 that came on my 02, but they are a bit pricey, so I run the Pirelli Dragons. They take a bit to warm up, but once they are, they work great. They give me good road feedback, and reasonable wear.

there are alot of other good tires but like everyone said it's a matter of personal preference.I like the dunlops and brdgestones, but i am on my first set of metzler sportec's.

No offense, but....

... there are probably over TWENTY VERY GOOD tire threads (and dozens more that aren't so good) that debate size, wear and grip. Just do a search on "tires", a brand/"model" name of tire or even size (i.e. 200... 190... 180... etc.) and you will find enough opinions to completely confuse yourself with. I promise.
