newbie to the site could use some advice
hey guys, I'm a long time zx11 rider (95zx11-d) and after saving up forever I'm about to pull the trigger on a brand spanking new '02 zx12. So far i've negotiated the price down to 9999., anybody do better than that? also i'm getting 4700 for my '95 zx11 trade in.
1)should I have the dealer swap out tires before i take it out of the showroom? and what tires are best if so?
2)any basic mods that i should be aware of?
3)I'm in need of a foldable ramp that will get this bike on and off of my dakota, any ideas?
4)tank bags and saddle bags, what are the best?
5)sneaker type footware and some sort of kevlarized jeans, what are the best?
6) lastly, what is the best way to break in the engine, specifically?
thanks guys,
jason370

I dont know too much about mods as my bike is mostly stock. As for the tires, you'll be getting new ones soon anyway (trust me). I just got a Nelson-Rigg tank bag and tail pack based on someones suggestion here (I forgot who - thanks whoever you were. Good call!). Great luggage!
Good luck with your new baby - you're gonna love it.

The bike EATS tires... I went through 4 pair last season... use the stockers up... they're free!
2)any basic mods that i should be aware of?
Chop yer rear fender and shorten yer turn signals

3)I'm in need of a foldable ramp that will get this bike on and off of my dakota, any ideas?
hmm... I had one made...
4)tank bags and saddle bags, what are the best?
Saddlebags... I have a set of Joe Rocket... great capacity for long trips... I suppose you could get a tank bag fer short trips if you wanted..
5)sneaker type footware and some sort of kevlarized jeans, what are the best?
Man... there have been some BAD accidents around this site lately.... I never ride unless I am wearing FULL leather with FULL armour... SERIOUSLY CONSIDER THIS.... please dont end up on our wounded list!
6) lastly, what is the best way to break in the engine, specifically?
follow the instructions SPECIFICALLY... it's worth the wait. They are there for a reason. READ YOUR MANUAL.
-Enjoy our site!

new 02 12R
great choice on the bike i love mine. The 208's will work fine, but as was stated earlier, no tire lasts long on this bike. I have a full set of luggage for the bike and I use Nelson-Riggs no complaints about them. I also wear full leather and armor anytime i ride, hot or not, would rather sweat than get killed....and if anybike has the potential to hurt you its this one....that is what makes it fun. I run Pirelli Dragons on it now, i like them too, but they are getting shreadded too....good luck and have fun with it.

Don't do it...full leather (perforated if you ride in hot weather most of the time), armor, boots, and helmet...ALWAYS!
6) lastly, what is the best way to break in the engine, specifically?
Yeah...let me do the proper break-in for you...I'm the best at it (just ask me! ) and I will have it done for you in no time, four oil changes and all!!!...the sooner for you to enjoy the huge power and torque of this beast

Full leathers, boots gloves etc....Hey, your spending $10K on the bike, spend another $500 on some gear.

Corbin and Heli-Bars. (done as much as 800 miles a day with them) And a Double-Bubble windshield from Zero Gravity.

I've had two ZX-12Rs and I broke both of them in the same way: keep under 4k rpm up to 600 miles. Oil change at 600 miles. keep under 6k rpm up to 1000 miles. After 1000 miles, I let 'em rip. Have had no problems other than a warped head on the second 12 down in some seriously hot fuckin' weather. Don't know if I can blame the heat. I think it was just a bad head from the get go.
I've known guys that have beaten the shit out of their 12s from mile 1 and haven't had problems. The 2k mile break in procedure is horse shit. The very first 12 owners in 2000 (me included, yay!) didn't get the modified break in procedure in time, so many of us did the 1k mile break in procedure and haven't had a problem.
Another thing to do with your bike that's simple...take off the end canister and pry out that fuckin' catalytic converter! You'll need a long screwdriver to pierce through the material, but you'll see it's easy to break apart. K&N air filters are another easy mod.
Good luck, have fun and be safe! Congrats on your upcoming purchase. See if they can go lower than $9999. Ask another dealer if they can beat it, then tell your dealer what they offered it to you for.

Dang!!!! I paid the full MSRP for my 2002 12...the dealer told me there were only 5 blue 12's released per state, and I really wanted the blue so I paid the full 11000 + taxes.
OUCH!!!! I cant believe you can get a 2002 12 for 10grand. Thats a hella good deal. And my bike is less than a month old. Grrrr.
