Another 12 that won't start.
Guys the old girl won't start. She just turns over but no firing. I've tried to check the fuel pump, but it doesn't seem to be working. When I disconnect the fuel line from the tank is fuel supposed to flow through the pump or does it have to be on? Because I'm not getting much out and I am extremely leary about jumping the fuel pump relay. So is there another safe way to do it or where can I get another without getting gouged by the dealer. I starting to get the blues from reading all of the bad ECU posts.

I think there will be no fuel flow unless the pump is activated, at least that is the way my 01 worked. What year is your 12? I would think you should be able to turn the key on and have fuel flow from the disconnected line, if the pump works. If thats not right, I'm sure someone will jump on this quickly.

It's a '05, with less than 1000 miles. All of my riding pals sold there bikes when I bought mine.

You are right to be wary of jumping the realy. It's an effective way to troubleshoot the pump, but if you do it wrong, you'll toast the ECU. I'm not near my notes, so I don't want to guess wring on whch wires to tell you, but Vincent or entropy must know......
Fuel won't flow without the pump activated. FIRST check for spark. That will send you in the right direction without much work.

The first question I always ask is what happened between now and the last time the bike ran?

Well, I tried the pump with the key and nothing from the pump. I tried to switch the ECU relay and nothing. I took the ECU relay out and the bike responded like I would think.

Nothing really. Rode sometime in Feb. while it was warm. I pull it out wash it up and go to start and nothing happens. This was two weeks ago.

Try using an air hose on all the handlebar components and also pull the coils and blow out the spark plug holes.

The fuel pump should run for three seconds when the key is turned on. This allows the fuel rail to come up to pressure. If this isn't happening, I'd look at some fuses and the tipover sensor.
Jumping the fuel pump relay is pretty straightforward - just pull the relay and jumper the two heavy-gauge wires in the connector together. I can't read the wire colors in my PDF manual, and I can't remember off-hand what the colors are, but it was pretty obvious. The supply side of the relay is switched power, so the ignition will need to be on.

Damn dude this is unbelievable.. I had the shop pull my head off because my bike wouldnt start.. Did spark test no spark.. Fuel pump also doesnt come on when turning the key like it use to. MY IGNITION SWITCH IS LOSE AND OCCASIONALLY DOES spark.. Since I have the kawi extended warranty Im going to get new Switch.. ( I should have listened to my uncle before I put the cam in he told me my switch was bad) live and learn..

Ah hell.
I can proudly say I'm an expert in this department.(lol)
I had the same problem. It was a combination of things. The fuel pump relay. But the turn over sensor can cause the no fuel and no spark problem. And lastly the ingnition switch was bad.
Try the ignition switch since its under warranty and also buy a fuel pump relay, its not that expensive. And while you wait on the ignition switch test the turn over sensor.
I dont have my manual with me now but if you need help let me know.

The 2 Relays on top are the same! Switch them! That will show if a relay is bad. I have "Toasted" an ECU (Well at least the the Pump part and had to permanently wire the Relay to make it run.
I will ask the Stupid Questions!
You have checked all of your fuses in the Top Box?
You have removed the Battery and checked the Fuse there and made sure the Battery is over 12 volts?
You lifted up the fuel tank and made sure the connectors to the Pump and fuel gauge are clean and tight!

I switched the relays - nothing.
All fuses on top good
I haven't checked the one near the batt. (Work)
All connections have been wiggled, probed, prayed upon and blown. (with air)
and the batt. volts are high.

Well you answered your question replying to mine.
You got water somewhere it ain't supposed to be. I agree, I'd look at the ignition switch and kill switch first. Get out your ohmmeter and manual, shouldn't take long to track down.
And funny and true story (at least if you weren't him):
I know of a guy that washed his bike and it wouldn't start afterwards.
He pretty much disassembled the bike trying to figure out what the problem was. Damn thing was not getting spark, but everything checked out. Switched ECU's, you name it.
After a day and a half he discovered the culprit (and actually admitted it):
When he was drying the bike off he must have toggled the kill switch on.
All that work and all along the kill switch was on.
