stef
do u have a PC3 USB??
If you do, you will need the ign module to change timing adv (or the muzzy mech adv), but i have no idea why yr dyno guy says it'll "ping" without the ign module.
Are you spraying and wanna pull timing out???

The Bad News......detonation can do damage before you hear the ping....ask Doug Meyer
He can explain it better that I could hope to...

i don't understand about the ping worry???
Is yr Compression ratio real high??
Do you know yr cold cranking pressure???
Like Texas says, it is very likely you WILL NOT HEAR PINGING.
I would match fuel to CR, keep AF 13.0:1 or slightly less, and not worry about pinging at all
If you are spraying, its a whole different story, but [sgt Schultz voice] "i know nothing" about spray.

Thanks Karl thats basically the information that Doug had given at some point ,and Im not
held in high esteem so what I say or think really is disregarded.....but it is important
to know the factors that affect normal combustion....

As long as you are not spraying, stock timing won't likely hurt you, but you may not be getting all the power possible. It depends on what you're looking for.
Regarding "pinging", on a naturally aspirated engine on the dyno, if you hear it and get out of the throttle immediately, or the engine runs through the bad spot (usually around peak torque) and it goes away, you'll probably not hurt anything. But you have to correct the condition or you will hurt it. On a turbo or N2O engine, if it rattles and you hear it, it's very likely damaged and would warrant an inspection. You need to know that it's happening well before you hear it. That's your final warning.
