i'm not sure that u'd want to decrease the file size. u'd have to lose quality or frame rate. actually, u may want to take it down to 15fps from 30 (or is it 16 from 32?) which should still be quite good i'd think. but i aint no expert. dont bother zipping the files. people often do this but u get minimal additional compression since the video format already compresses it.

here's one for ya
my .avi works on my medi aplayer 7.0 on my machine
I copy it up to my hosting site where my website is, then copy it back down to my machine and now it does not work.
says "no combination of filters could be found to render the stream"
any idea why?

ddpete, not sure about your upload/download troubles there - perhaps check to ensure the file downloaded is exactly the same as the upload [perhaps it's getting corrupted]. You can do the checking using various file signature tools... md5 for example. Of course, windows doesnt come with that, so your mileage will vary.
As for making you files smaller, but still not degrading them too much... I would strongly suggest getting a DIVX video encoder tool. It'll do great stuff... results depend on settings used and movement in the footage.
good luck,

avis
Depending on the codecs used they can be a pain in the arse to get going. Windows media player has some probs with them. DivX codec usually loads what ya need. Helped on most of mine at least.

I've been playing around with making some WMV files, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 files. (and some AVI too)
Gotta say that I haven't seen a single 15 frame-per-second encoding that looks worth a crap. Motion is just too jaggy because the bikes are moving too fast on the launch assuming that's where the camera location is at.
Seems like there's a "3MB" WMV file that is working well for me, as far as quality vs size goes, but I haven't tested that beyond my own PC yet.
MPEG-1 seems to be the most universal, small file that you can create. Quality is not as great as I would like to have, but you can get a drag race on only 3-5 MB which is relatively small for downloading by everyone.

I just want to make an mpg of my avi.
the free software I found on zdnet said that it would do that, but when installed, did not. it only came with the player

sounds like you need the DIVX software. I'm pretty sure it's still free out there, and can do what you need.
