Gearing??
OK,, so ive changed out my front sprocket to a 17 toofer because of the lack of power in the third gear range to hold the wheelies,,my question is is it overkill,, i ask this because in the past i have heard guys talking about how the 17/47 setup is a good way to go,, i have not tried out the bike yet,, with the new gear on ,, so i really dont know what to expect from the animal.. so what is it 17/48 or 17/47

Ask Shane661....thats all he rocks.....good for 170something mph and maybe even 6s in the 1/8 mile....but again, I'm no pro....you'd have to ask him!

Twista, I was mentioning Shane as an inside joke (because he runs similar gearing at the 1/4 mile as he does at the mile).
Back to the issue:
You don't need to run a 17 tooth AND a 47. Stock gearing is 18/46 as you know. Good for 201-202 in theory, in reality its good for high 190s as no one to date has hit 200.00 mph on stock gearing.
By going to a 17 tooth sprocket in the front it is like going up 2.5 teeth in the rear, which is what Supra was pointing out.
The point being, the 17 tooth sprocket will give you a noticable difference in acceleration. Personally I find the 12 pulls pretty hard no matter WHAT gearing I put on it and at times changing by 1 tooth in the rear isn't always noticable because of the power of the 12.
For wheelies it should be pretty good now....however, keep in mind now that the SPEED you can achieve in 3rd gear is LOWER than before. Before you were good for about 141-142 on the limiter of 3rd...now it will be a few mph LOWER but it will pull HARDER TO THAT SPEED!
FWIW, I have ridden with a guy who used to wheelie is zx12 to about 140. He would say on occaision that the 12 would get this kind of sideways weave around 120 and that he would have to back off of it and try to ride THRU it so to speak. Who knows, could have been his rear shock setting for his weight, his technique. The point being is that he was stock geared and could do it and he weighed 220 lbs or so, so it CAN be done on stock gearing, it just may take some more technique. He always clutched it up and had it at 11:00 all day long. I can post vids of him if you like aboard a 10R (he switched to the 10) and you can see his smooth technique so you know I'm not just BSing you.
Another person who shall remain nameless said going DOWN a few teeth in the rear (which would be like going UP in the front by 1, the exact OPPOSITE of what you are doing) said he could ride 3rd gear better on his 98 ZX-9R because, although he had less gurnt, the gear was LONGER and didn't requre a shift into 4th as early so he could play with balance point with some extra mph.
I am mentioning all of this not to discourage you from the swap, hell I have a 17 bolted on mine right now!
Since you already have the 17/46 set-up, I would go out and rock it and see how YOU feel! It will take a good portion of the day IMO to get used to the extra torque. Many people swear 17/46 is the way the Kawasaki should have been released from the factory! I would say play wth it, be careful w/the wheelies since its touchier now on the throttle.
In my opinion if you still want a little more grunt, then go with a 17/47 set-up. The reason many people go with it is that you can keep almost the same wheelbase/chain by going -1 up front and +1 in the rear. Yo ufigure they already went with 17 up front (= to about +2.5 in the rear)....so you know they want extra pull....hence why they sometimes go up in the rear by 1 too!
Also, some drag racing guys like it because stock gearing is good for 141-142 as I stated earlier on the limiter in 3rd. Going -1 up front gets you coming thru the traps in 4th gear but not quite that close to redline as one would like to be...adding that 1 tooth on the rear gets them a little more grunt and trap a little closer to redline than just 17/46.
Enjoy the 17/46, if you want more grunt, go with 17/47!
