12r K&N'S are junk...
Just took my K&N's out to check/clean them and my observation is that they do suck! I know that the seal is susposed to be poor on them and it is. I greased them when I put them in and then duct taped them over the top. Dirt and bugs and all kinds of stuff blew out the top past the seal and got trapped in the duct tape. I put them back in using some weather stripping instead of duct tape but I think I am going to order some BMC's. Should I get street or race?? I am going to get dyno tuned in 3 weeks so I meed to get them soon. Just thought I would share my observation.

Even on the BM W sites they state that the K & N's are junk ( always ongoing debate of course) with the sealing a major issue and that the K & N's let the bikes run to weak. So if they are not good enough for a BWM then they certainly won't be good enough for Japans pride and glory :-)
Horses for courses but if your bike is standard, then I'd always keep the standard air filters in.

I've heard that said for many years. Someone didn't get the memo.

I still have them in my '02. When I put them in, greased of course, I reached inside behind them to push the edges out where they belong. I ran a finger around the edges, and checked that the screens were'nt distorted. they seem to be sealed up good to me??
When I checked them, they seemed normal enough... some junk stuck to the front edges, but nothing seemed to get past.
The f'ing airbox still gets the usual coating of that mystery sandy crap though...
Pushing them in/ yanking them out was always a bit goofy. The rigid BMC's must be a breeze compared to that..

I have never had any problems with mine either. I got the monster intake as well. I know it sucks more shit in 'cause I clean it out. K&N's seem to seal fine. +1 on the goofy removal and installation. Rog put BMC's in another 12 and had to machine some edges to get it to fit. I dont think that there are any performance gains or losses between the two though. If so I have not seen any numbers to prove anything.

Buy the BMC Race! After YEARS of riding and Racing I have not seen any Dirt in the Airbox like I did with the "Stock" Filters!

The BMC's are probably better, But I have the K&N's and have never had any problem with them. THey seal well and, if greased properly, slide in and out fine.

I still run K&N's in my A1 and actually prefer them over BMC because done right they seal very well (softer frame).
Not that I care about this debate.
