Carbon Muzzy can melted......HELP!!
Ok so its not melted all the way. I have only had it for 3000 miles and its allready discolored. And towards the bottom of the can i can feel the roughness of the actual carbon fiber. Any one else have the same experience? Did muzzy replace it or are you just shit out of luck? I have heard from zx-12r.org that the Akra's are not as prone to do this. I may be switching to Akra before the year is out. My first muzzy exhaust....  well maybe my last also.....

My hubby had the same problem on the Busa with the Yoshimura Carbon Fiber exhaust. It burnt a hole thru the bottom after only a year.
The did not warranty it, he would have had to buy a new carbon sleeve. Not sure about Muzzy!

... or something is WAY WRONG! I guess I'm just lucky.
Being the "King of CF canister abuse", I havent had any problems with my Muzzy. This is after...
1. 30,000 miles
2. 10,000 miles with little or no packing
3. Two trips to the dyno
4. Two track days (road courses)
and last but not least...
5. Setting the heat tape on the lower fairing due to sustained high RPMs while on the race stands (we'll forgo the "details"). Let's just say that on one occasion, the Ti pipe was so hot, it was GLOWING BRIGHT ORANGE! I swear!
I'm guess that the discolored spot is due to excessive heat in that area. IMHO, a SLIGHT rough feel to the surface isn't that uncommon. I'd figure that's because Muzzy doesn't put a real thick clear coat over the CF. I've seen some other makes of CF canisters that were smooth as glass, but the clearcoat had yellowed. I guess it's a "one or the other" kinda thing.
What I'm wondering is the "status" of your packing? I was under the impression that it'd last for around 5K miles. You might want to check it though. 3K miles seems kinda soon to be having problems with even the "cheapest" of CF canisters, but I'm by no means an expert on such.

Totally dependant on usage. You can kill one on a dyno in a day, or like Red's it may last year. You MUST keep a carbon can well packed. Carbon WILL NOT withstand the direct heat of exhaust. We make this quite clear in the packaging.

Well considering my bike has never seen a dyno and 3000 wasn't actual milage.... I went and checked my logs and i put the pipe on at 5800.... I now have 8200 on the pipe.... If the packing goes out every 2400 miles... then fuck this.... Its not even summer yet here.... jeez.... We will see how it keeps holding up.

repacking
Doug what is the cost of repacking if the can is shipped back to muzzys. I've done it before on my old titanium zx11 exhaust but not sure if I want to dick around with drilling and re-riviting the carbon can. I have two, so I can send one in for service.

Under any "normal" usage you should get more than 3000 miles.
We do a rebuild/re-pack for $49.95. Just call and get an RA number and send it in. If it has some defect that caused the problem consideration will be given. Our carbon is no different from anyone's. We all use the same vendors.

They do Break down from high heat..... ... I have 3000 miles on my full stainless muzzy and carbon can.....
It is now a little discolored at the bottom of the can and the surface is starting to detierate the epoxy resin that is in the carbon fiber..... so you can kind of feel the actual carbon fiber a little now.
P.S..... All this is probably due to the fact that i have wrapped my exhaust all the way to past the spring...... There is a 10 in. section in the middle that is not wrapped but the headers are fully wrapped. and then the back half of the hearder and part of the S-pipe..... But muzzys site shows a Stainless Oval can now so i might be purchacing one of those within the next couple months.... I will try to take some pics sunday and get them up here for you to see.
Its really not that bad yet and you have to be looking for it. Just thought i would share this info with ya....

Of course this leads to the flurry of pro Akro anti Muzzy posts. The most interesting to me from Easy himself "Akrapovic makes their own Carbon Fiber Recipe specifically for their CANs". I'll have to remember that.

ZX12s and busas both put out significant heat. You have to stay on top of the packing. My Muzzy full Ti system lasted less than 2,000 miles before the packing was gone and I started noticing a couple of hot spots (discoloration).

Black aluminum Canister???
Hey Doug, I have the Carbon Can for the color appearence!!! Is there anyway you can talk Rob into selling a BLACK ALUMINUM CANISTER??? I'll set up a poll and see how many guys would like it too???

Are you talking gloss black? Semi? Flat? I like the heat resistance of aluminum but the looks of carbon fiber. Seems you may have hit on a good comprimise.
