A question about mixing parts
I bought a trashed (unknowingly) 2000 zx12r, and after getting some used parts from alot of great people on here, realized that the bike previously had a 2001 motor in it. Ive tried to cross reference some of tha parts, but dont know if anyone has mixed parts before......the upper and lower cases are 2000, the internals are 2001 as well as the clutch...the head I got from Mad Mike is from a 2000, but Im puzzled at the id numbers on the cams......they are the same as the one I got from Mike, so Im wondering if the guy I got this from played mix and match as well.......but the ECU is a 2001 unit as are the throttle bodies......any advice from you top zx12 guys?

The cam angle sensor on the 2000 cams are in different places.. You cant mix a 2000 ecu with a 2001 ecu.. everything else should be fine

the placement of the cam sensor was what was throwing me off........I think the guy mated a 2000 head with all the trimmings to a 2001 lower unit......but then the ecu shouldnt have worked, right?
Im going to get a pc3r anyways, but I was curious if mating the head to a newer lower unit would work.......thoughts?

Yes, but you need to make sure that your cams match your ECU...

That is what Im wondering.....is there any way to identify the cams by a number or spamp or anything? All the markings from the broken cams match the ones that you sent me with that head...so Im thinking that they are the same....next question...those cams you sent me were from a 2000 right? LOL.......you pros are prolly laughing big time!! what if the cam sensor was offa the 2001 model? Mike, you remember this bike right? the guy prolly just threw a bunch of shit together cuz he knew he had a sucker on the line.....gawd I hope I run into him in person sometime! (evil grin)

look down the EX cam (which matches your CPU) like aiming a rifle.
rotate the cam until the lobe closest to you is at 12 O'clock.
Notice the position of the pickup tip like a clock 2.-3-4 oclock etc.
Now do the same with the new cam and you will see the pickup is not in the same time.
Grind the locator pin off so the the pickup can turn to the same time/place as your original.
The screw will hold it in place without the locatator tip, just tighten and go.

thanks!! I will try it.........when I match up the sheared off cam with the new one I was sure (almost sure) that they were in the same position, but that makes sense. Ill use my dial indicator to make sure its perfect. Thanks a million to you and mike and todd....you guys are top shelf.
Im an old school honda v-4 guy and have built some dandies, but feel like a rookie tard with this new tech stuff like on the 12........there are some biiiiiiiiiiiig brain pans on this site...LOL!!!! thanks again!

I am almost positive those were 00 cams... and if the ECU is a 01, it will not work correctly.. you will need to either change the ECU and "sensor(??)" or as Ninja states you can adjust your sensor on the cam itself...
I hope this helps... give me a call if you need...

Buddy made a lil jig outa solder by partially wrapping it around the cam with the trigger in the right place, then moved the bent solder to the other cam and positioned the trigger. I think he's traveling now, but the way he described it, it sounded real easy.

thats kinda what I was thinking I was gonna so......sort of.....I have a jig that I made that is ...well...kind of like a key cutter.......it follows the contour / position of cam "A" in the jig and the finger(feeler) corolate to the exact same position on cam "B" in the jig. I made if for my interceptors.
Ill let ya know how it turns out.
Thanks a bunch everyone!

It has to be close not perfect.
If it had to be in one spot we could not degree the cams to try different number.
