wfo12 goes down hard on Sunday!
I was coming home early Sunday morning on a back road and as I'm coming around a left hander I see a group of deer all over the road. I immediately start to look for a place to go and go off the shoulder hard on the brakes. After that I don't remember much.
I guess I was knocked out for about 30-40 min. When I came to I'm lying in the middle of a field and can't find the bike.
End up going to the ER in the next town thanks to a nice elderly couple in a close house. I must have looked a fright when I came to the door.
The deputy sheriff that handled it said I shouldn't have walked away. Apparently I hit a culvert that I couldn't see and high-sided into a field.
I am okay....broken left wrist, the tops of my knees look like hamburger, numerous contusions, abrasions and a severe concussion. I'm not sure what all ill-effects that I'll suffer from this wreck. Damned lucky to be alive from what the ER crew, the cops and numerous others say. I know, I know...should have been wearing the helmet!
I won't even go into what the bike looks like. It's totalled from what I can tell. The upper fairing is completely GONE, no gauges, mirrors, headlight, nothing. The subframe is bent at a nasty angle, exhaust bent upward also. Not sure if the frame is bent but it looks it.
I'm not sure about my future in motorcycling at this point. This is strike number two for me, and I'm not sure that I want to chance number 3. Number 1 happened four years ago with the guy that was in the process of buying my house. We got t-boned and flipped 4 times by a girl who ran a stop sign. They said we shouldn't have survived that one either. That one was about 1/2 mile from the house.
After reading what happened to Horsepower Mike I know what he's going through, albeit to a MUCH lesser degree.
Everyone please be safe out there and remember that it only takes once not to be able to motorcycle again. I'm not sure if I'm at that point, but it will take me a while to decide what my future in this sport will be if at all.

Glad your ok.
As far as riding again i can't advise you on that, I can tell you what's happened to me.
I was a long time rider, I grew up on bike's, and i took a couple spill's close together and at the same time i lost a couple friend's on bike's. I quit riding for almost 10 year's. I'm back riding and i'm glad i am.
But i could be one get-off to hanging it up also. I don't know. The choice is your's and if your married it should be a family decesion.

damn dude....
That sucks about the get off man...but lucky or not you're alive for a reason. Your crash wasn't because of doing something dumb so anything after that you have to just expect however bad it sucks. I'll bet next time you don't go anywhere without that helmet....

That sucks! Glad to hear you are in reasonably good condition considering the possibilities--especially without a helmet. Sorry to hear about the bike.
Take your time and consider whether this is a message about motorcycling (and whether you should quit), your mortality and the value of your life, or just about the fact that you are here for a purpose and you should get your life on track to whatever that purpose is.
Take care,
Mike

Do yourself a favor and don't make any rash decisions. Let yourself heal and go from there. Your story makes me feel lucky. I t-boned a deer just outside of Cressent City CAlif. last year on the way to Laguna. The bike and I both walked away. The bike had a hole in the radiator and some busted body parts but it ran!!
It has taken quite some time for me to get a level of comfort in the rural areas. And I have two other close encounters with deer since.
Glad you came out in as good as shape as you are and here is to a speedy recovery.

Glad you are going to be OK.
It seems every spring we have our share of friends go down. We need to extend the "gun" season for deer to reduce their population. Bow and muzzle loaders don't seem to be doing the trick. There are too many deer related accidents these days. I'm actually surprised that auto insurance companies haven't made any inroads into getting the gun season extended because of all the money they have to pay out every time somebody hits one of the acorn eating sons-o-bitches. A neighbor of mine that lives directly accross the street from me put out a deer feeder in his back yard. Every night around dusk it goes off and releases some "deer chow" and the things come out of the woods like bums at the free store. I hope they eat his shrubs and trees down to the nubs.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I had one of my friends take my ZX-11 over to his place for a while. At least I've still got it in case I decide to stay with the bikes. I'm going to go pick up the 12 today and hopefully get some pics taken and posted of it later today. You'll be shocked as I was when I looked at it.
Soreness is slowly going away. I'm still kind of worried about my head as it still hurts and I get woozy now and again and have to sit down while being up and around. I'm sure that will pass.
