History Topics by Doug Meyer
To Doug Meyer:
I'm a history teacher by profession., Going to Graduate School for school counseling. I'm trying to catalogue as much data as possible and put it together..
Did you do any special projects for the 1988-1989 ZX10 or zx11 while you were at Dublin Kawasaki?
thanks,

I seem to remember a ZX11 being ripped in 2 by a certain moto journalist.

Supra,
OK, here are the high points of that period 86 to maybe 94-
'86- set 1000 cc Production record (169 + ) on a "1000 Ninja" That's the one that came with the red pajamas (Don't ask).
'87- set 750 cc production record (154 or so I think) on a ZX-750 A1
'88 - re-set the 1000 Production record on a ZX-10 (170+) That was a beautiful bike.
Took that same bike and set an NHRA national record (10 something) with Dale Walker riding.
'90 Set three records in three days on a ZX-11 C1, 1300 Production, with 1109 ccs (180.163), Modified Production 1300 (190.490)-- Well, will you look at that! A pipe was worth 10 mph. Who'da thought that could happen?
Then, re-set that record to 191.797
'91, took that ZX-11 and added a "one -off" Electronic Fuel Injection developed and provided by Mark Dobeck (founder of DynoJet Research). Only managed to set a record in the altered 1300 class at 186+. Couldn't flow enough fuel. Melted pistons. (Oh Gee, you mean I have to add GAS with the AIR?)
'93 Re-set the 750 production record with a ZX-750-R I prepared, owned and loaned by John Ivy and ridden by Susan Lee. Somewhere in there, Susan also rode a ZX-600E I built and set a 600 production record. In '92, brought that record setting ZX-11C1 to the MOTORCYCLIST MAGAZINE "Superbikes From Hell" Competition, still with the EFI but "tuned up" a bit. The bike set the second fastest lap time, the third fastest 1/4 (9.99) and the second fastest top speed(188) Lee Sheirt's NITROUS 1350 GSXR beat me by TWO mph with a 190 mph pass. In the article, Lance Holst said, "Meyer's ZX-11 pulled on the top end with a vengance I've never felt on any other normally aspirated bike".
In '92 that bike was entered in the SPORT RIDER magazine UFO shootout, as a 1080 with the 41mm carbs and all carbon fiber bodywork, Marchesini wheels, Kayaba inverted forks, yadda, yadda. The ZX-11 bike had the second fastest lap time (behind the Two Bros CBR900RR ), The second fastest naturally aspirated 1/4 at 9.92 sec. (behind the Sims and Rohm 1452cc GSXR). Unfortunately, before the bike could be run for top speed, there was a small error by Nick Ienatsch when he selected second gear instead of fourth while exiting a turn at Willow springs. The ensuing crash tore the bike in two and left only the forks, the engine and the brakes out of the dumpster. I'm pretty sure it would have gone high 190's. (On pavement) End of an era.
Bonneville '93 brought on the ZX-11 D which by '95, I was running 199.444 mph as an 1140 with carbs and had set several records. That engine, with absolutely no changes, and just installed in Sam Wheeler's EZ Hook Liner pushed that bike to 304 mph.
There's some other crap, but I'd have to dig for it. I don't usually bring this stuff up, but you asked.....

ZX12mark,
No, that was prior to the Nitro injected ZX-11 that we built at Muzzys and prior to Sam switching to the Mr. Turbo.
I literally took my (1140cc carb/gas) engine out of my bike carried it over to Sam's liner on the salt and they installed it in the liner.
There is a lesson in aerodynamics here. That engine in my bike went 199 mph, in the EZ Hook it went 304mph, solely as a result of the reduced drag.
For a long time Sam resisted any installations that would require cutting on the body. Finally he relented and went Turbo and Terry stepped up and gave him a setup.

Too cool, I remember reading this stuff in the mags when I was a kid. I think I was
still riding around on my 84 GPZ 1100 for most of that story. Don't know why, but I usually
end up keeping a bike for about 10 years. Guess I only have 2 more left on my 00 ZX-12.

For what it's worth the Kaz 900rr endurance bike with Holst as pilot
only beat us once in1993, Open Mod Prod at Willow with my ZX11"C".
They were not happy about that.
Quick times were in low 28's on the old track. I think your bike with
slicks would have possibly have gone low 27's with Nick. I still have
that bike here in Atlanta. I think you remember who I am.// Steve

Doug,
Arias 1080's, Falicon crank work, OEM rods, OS valves, SBM head-work
no balancer and at that time was using CVKD 40's for Open Mod Prod
etc. etc. etc. $$$$$, no need to explain more you know what it takes.
I never did get back to you to get some pics of the carnage after Nick's
shift error. That could have gone from a real bad day to a real tragedy.
Heard a while back your doing aircraft now ???
Good to talk to you again, time is flying!
A few pics of your bike from ??? date, but I know it was at Sears Point

Thanks for the pics! That bike WAS nice wasn't it! The 1080's rock. It's just one of those combinations that hit all the sweet spots.
I have a couple of snaps of the wreck- I'll put them in line to get digitized. I'm taking a stack of photos to Costco soon. will post in the future

Doug,
Yes, that was the prime example of any I've ever seen.
Sorry on the pics but as a tech type guy the ones I took were
of the details vs overall so the total view is not there. The guys
do not realize how may hours you spent on the fine details of
alignment etc.and making that one a work of art. For some
reason in the fog of my brain in the past I remember seeing a
very small pic in Sport Rider Mag of the remains. I do recall
Nick going to the hospital and getting stitched up from the
cuts in his arms from the leathers protection cups.
