polished wheels with translucent powder coat
Changing tires and brakes......so it's a good time to do the wheels I'm thinking about polishing the wheels and then having them powder coated a translucent color. The bike is an 02 Red. May be just do the hubs and spokes the transluscent color and do the lips clear. Should look bitchin
Any one have experience or knowldge of how they look after a couple seasons? I saw a set on an R1 at a show that looked really cool.

the previous owner of my '04 didn't like the matte black finish on the wheels so he had them powder coated gloss black for $500? They look nice but I'm thinking WTF what a waste of money, should've gone with some color. personally I really liked the gold rims on the '03. if anyone has a nice set of those and wants these....

that's what I was thinking. he did have a tendency to exagerate about cost of things he did but it averaged about 25% over not 500% so I think he did get taken :P

I was quoted $50 per wheel for the powder coat.....haven't checked on the cost of polishing yet.
Anyone know how long it would take if I polished them myself?

I had mine polished by my dealer for $125. It's not hard to do yourself if you have time. Just put the bike up on a stand and let it idle in 2nd or 3rd gear (you may want to point a fan at the radiator to help keep it cool). Hold wet/dry sandpaper agains the wheel as it turns, moving to finer grits until finishing with polishing compounds. The front works the same, except you will need an electric motor to spin the wheel. A bench grinder or washing machine motor with a rubber wheel will work. In my case I only had the smooth part of the wheel polished. The spokes and hub and the rough cast center of the rim stayed red. It turned out good though.
here are a couple of pics of how mine turned out.

A bud of mine does powdering on the side. He did exactly what you want to his wife's R6. Translucent red over the entire wheel with polished edges. Looks really nice. I dont have a pic but feel free to PM me for his website. I'm sure he'd send you a pic. They've been done for 2 seasons and still look good if I recall.

ZX11-12, fantastic looking wheels! My bike is a red 02, which is a bit differen color than the 2000 or 2001 red. The wheels on my bike are the ugly gray color, so I want to do the whole wheel. But have to admit the colored hub and spokes with polished lips look way cool.
If the polished part is not coated, how often do you have to touch 'em up?
Scooter, thanks. I've got a good line on someone local to do the powder coating.

Thanks for the compliment!
I never really did much to keep them looking good. They never showed a tendency to oxidize at all, but they would get tiny towell scratches in them that would make them look cloudy. About twice per year, I would put the bike up on stands and turn the wheels while holding a soft rag with metal polish against it. That's all I did.
I did the same thing to my current bike (CBR1000RR) and I'm sure I'll do it to my next bike (ZX-14)this spring as well.
Here are some pics of my CBR. The wheels on it were black, which is closer to aht you have already.

and since I'm posting pics here...this as nothing to do with wheels, but....
This is my other bike. I'm going to sell them both this spring in order to buy a ZX-14 and a Valkyrie Interstate for trips witht he wife.

Your fingers don't get anywhere near the chain if you hold the sandpaper down at the bottom part of the wheel. If you do it this way you don't need to remove the tire from the wheel, or even the wheel from the bike.
Stripper will get rid of the paint, but it won't polish the aliminum. You still have to polish it somehow.

Did you mean the CBX though? THE CBR is just a stock bike, even though I keep it clean enough to eat off of.

I got my polishing kit form ebay for around £40 and all you need it a good drill
before you start you need to remove paint of the wheels and for that I used stuff called nitro but you will do that with any paint removal. just be carefull as this stuff is a bit nasty to skin and eyes

polishing kit:

wheel before

and after polishing

That is on the road between Frisco and Breckenridge. That's Lake Dillon....good eye.
I rode out there from WV last summer. 3803 miles round trip.
Real estate is insane in Breckenridge. You must be doing OK for yourself.

It's a timeshare, you can pick them up on ebay next to nothing. we got a 3 story 3 bedroom townhouse christmas week for $1800 deeded, annual fee is $400. you rode the cbx on that trip? how was that? I'm sure the 6cyl is a smooth ride.
let us know when you sell it, I've always wanted one

It purred like a kitten the whole way. The only incident was losing a chain 8 miles east of Topeka, KS.
I plan on selling it this spring. I'll post here when I do. But if your interested, I think I'm going to ask $6000 for it. Let me know if you are serious about wanting it, we'll talk.

although that candy apple red cbx is the bomb, I'm leaning more toward the pearl white touring model with the lugage. as nice as yours is, you shouldn't have a problem getting that. museums are buying them up.
