165 is a low speed rating? from what I have seen that is the second highest speed rating. the other is 165+mph rating...

I have used my shinkos for daily riding and had good luck. They hook well on street or track. I have had mine to 165 at least without any major issues. Only problem is they do change the way the bike leans in a turn due to the fltspot they have in middle, no big deal for street but not great in the twisties. Also, dont do heavy burnouts with shinkos because they do lose rubber internally. After about 3500 miles and a bunch of 1/8 miles mine had a ton of rubber piec3es inside when we changed the rear, they come apart internally under heat. It looks like little rubber bb's inside tire rolling around possibly affecting balance?
I like them still though, my local shop doesnt like them though because they come apart and warns against them even though I still buy them. Just something to think about. I doubt micky t's come apart internally but have never ran them.

They heat up very fast. Not good for high sustained high speeds. I used them street/strip for a few months with no problems...I took them off for running at Maxton.

Could you explain this? What better tire is there out there for street/strip use?

FYI, the speed rating on a shinko is the exact same as almost every other tire you would buy for a street bike. Same as a pilot power, mickey, metzler, pirelli... no different.

that is not true... go to Pirelli and look at the speed rating... there is rating for up to 165... and then there is a rating for 165+...

eh, gonna have to point me to that link as I couldn't find anything on a 165mph speed rating. Unless you're talking about the "W vs (W)" they mention on a spread on one part of the page I saw. In which case, ALL of the ZR tires I saw on the page that you'd put on a street bike (ok, high powered street bike" would be rated the same... or the 165mph+ rating.

I took some pics a few years ago when this argument kept coming up about the Shinko somehow having a lower speed rating.

Top is a BT010, bottom is a Metzler M1.

Metzler Rennsport

Shinko 003

Supercorsa

The speed rating is the same on all of them. Only difference I see are the load ratings.

Shinkos are significantly HEAVIER than their 180/55 thru 200/50. They are a bit stickier for the strip but I have had good results with

Street
Strip
LSR
Twisties

With pirelli Supercorsas. I have cut 1.6 60 ft times on them on more than one attempt @ the strip and I'm no pro by any means.

The main advantage for shinko's is at the strip. They are really cheap, and hook like crazy. And they are less than 1/2 the cost of new Pirelli's.

In every other respect, I would choose a better brand of tire.

Someone told me that Shinko was actually part of the Cheng Shin company...not sure if that is true or not.

I agree that the Pirellis will hook with the Shinkos at the strip, but I have found that the Shinko hooks better on the street, not to mention the Shinko seems to have a longer life than the Pirellis.

Had Pirellis and Shinkos, they both did a good job for me at the strip, if the track was decent .

+1

I can't tell you how many passes I got out of a Shinko, over a 100, easy.

The Supercorsa, while really a superior tire, is much more expensive, and will wear out faster.

no that is what I was looking at Matt... only thing it is stamped on the shinko "not for use of speeds over 165mph"
that is what I was going by...
or that is the way i understood it anyway... I could have misunderstood it I am sure...

Food for thought, you can get 2 race take-off rear supercorsas for the price of 1 new shinko.

Mine went 208 mph

More food for thought, would you trust a worn take off on the street in all conditions ? Not me. I wouldn't go railing on a Shinko, but I'd ride it on the street. I wouldn't trust take offs on the street period.

...and I can get a brand new Shinko 003 for $105 + $10 to mount it. 1.4x's all day long

hmm, I just went out and looked at one of mine and sho'nuff, it's molded right there only it's 168mph. Interesting that it's only on the left side of the tire though.

Bonneville. 10 mph headwind I ran 197 @ the trap, 199 on GPS on spray, rpms BARELY MOVING in 6th approaching redline.

10 mph tailwind same gearing I ran 206 thru the traps, 208 on GPS. I would like to point out that the bike "could" have gone faster but I had 18/44 gearing on it and had to keep letting off the nitrous button 100 rpms before the limiter, then it would fall back down 100 rpms, then I'd hit the button again to keep my "avg" up thru the flying mile trap....button dance....man I'm sure I had 210+ if I had gone down another tooth in the rear.....but I didn't wanna gear for almost 215 mph with a little 40 shot.....

As it stood I only managed 193.xx mph on GPS AND TRAPS flat out with that gearing no wind no spray. Shows how picking gearing too tall even flat out for miles won't get you to the MPH you need. I was playing w/different tucks but the RPMS sat somewhere before if not right @ redline.

I really trust Supercorsas. Now I cycle them off from my track day gixxer 600 so I know where the tire has been. Supposedly not as much tire growth with a pirelli so it helps keep your mph projections a little more consistent (presumably).

I would like to point out that w/the Supercorsa you can REALLY high psi (like LSR Stuff) in them and they STILL hook reasonably well. They are very close with the Shinkos in grip from what others report. Who wants to run top end on a heavy tire that is only rated for 600cc type speeds? And don't you have to really drop the psi down to get them to work properly? Low psi is a bad idea for top end runs (TRUST ME!) I have been able to hook with 50-55 psi in the rear and cut 1.6 60 fts on a stock wheelbase zx12 w/no burnout. Supercorsas rock. And they weigh what.....1-2 lbs less at least? Fuggedaboutit!

10 mph tailwind? Geez!!!

I ran 300 mph, downhill, in a local Tornado. I had to hang near a trailer park for a week, waiting for one to hit....a lot cheaper than going out to Bonneville!

I was one of the last runs, they almost didn't let me go but I told em if I'm fighting the 10 mph headwind its only fair to let me get my 10 mph tailwind. It was 9.xx mph but you know how the wind varies...
