Near-New D207 Chunks Itself on me!!

I have maybe 300 or so miles on a rear D207 on ZX12R. I took it on a fairly speedy trip to Heidelburg (abou 60-70 miles) at about 100-130 MPH (Autobahn. There were about 2-3 blasts up to 170MPH or so. Just short blasts, then back to cruising velocity of 100-130. The bike started feeling a bit loose from the rear towards the end of the trip. I thought something might be wrong in the suspension. I even stopped to make sure everything was tight. I found no problems with the suspension... didn't think about checking the rear tire. took her the rest of the way into town at a fairly low speed. Averything seemed to be OK until I got on her in 1st gear. The tire just spun like crazy, I thought there might be oil on it or something. I pulled to the side of the road, and she was just about flat, with a couple huge chunks of rubber out of her. If I get a chance, I will post some pics. Scared the crap out of me. I have a hunch what might have caused this:

I was running a FEW PSI (Maybe 31-33) lower than stock on both front and rear tires. I guess the tire just got really hot, and failed? I kno running them lower pressures causes more heat, but I really didn't think that was low enough to cause a failure? I have gone on this exact same trip, at the same speeds before with no problems what so ever. Anyone with some knowledge care to chime in?

Anyways, I will be replacing both front and rear with 010s this coming week. It was a pain in the ass to get someone to come down and trailer me home but I sure am thankful that it didn't cause a crash!

Tim, Until yesterday I had only run 207s, and I never had a problem such as this. But, I always keep mine inflated to 41-42 lbs. And yes, I have taken it up at least to the speeds you hit on the Autobahn.

Tire Pressure

I guess I will be keeping the pressure at the factory reccomendation from here on out. I was running it a bit low for added traction.... I am aware that this creates more heat in the tires... but I wasn't running them THAT LOW??? Maybe I had an imperfect tire, and the lower pressure/higher speeds just aggrivated the problem? I guess I will never know. It was sooooo scary seeing the tire chunked up like that, just coming off the Autobahn.
Lesson Learned... I will stay VERY close to the reccomended pressure.... and Im going to try some other tires to hopefully last longer.

I think if you stay around 38 psi you will be OK. BTW, I expect to be in Heidelburg this fall. Wonder what it would cost to bring my 12?

You ever wonder...

Why a country that has roads like the Autobahn, has car manufacturers like Porsche, Mercedes, BMW and Audi, wants to limit the top speed on motorcycles?

A lot of money... way too much. The weather takes a big old nasty crap in the fall. If you are going to be here a while, it would be best to rent. You can email me when you get closer to coming over here, and maybe we can get a beer or something.

Because the legistrators that proposed these laws are tired of driving their $100K Benz & Beemers getting blown off the road by ZX12R's !!!

Short and Sweet

I have those tires on they where stock on my 02.
1750 miles of hard riding at DGIII last week and the rear is shot. I have never liked them and wonder why Kaw. doesn't change suppliers.
