An old chain alignment question..

There was a discussion back in '01 about shimming the frt sprocket .01'', to line up perfectly with the rear. I want to try this, but don't know if I can buy such a washer/spacer, or what mateial/technique to make one myself??
I never was satisfied with my '00's chain alignment, and now my '02 seems a bit off also.
Are the '02's better aligned than '00's??

thankyou, yet again,

Jeff

Jeff,
just curious. how do you know that yr f sprocket is .010" out of line with the rear.
That is a pretty small amount. Interesting thought.

It would seem that the only direction you could space the sprocket is towards the rider's left.
(To take the sprocket to the right wrt the rear sprocket you could shim the rear motor mounts)

Or you could get a couple r axle spacers made and move the rear sprocket wrt the front.

It was an old LAB ZX12R discussion....Yes, the shim was inside of the frt sprocket. There were a few very credible guys discussing it.
The case was, and is for me, that no matter how (apparently) well you get the chain to ride on the rear sprocket, the inside of the frt sprocket gets chewed away by the chain. I
ve had a couple do this, no matter how well it seemed to be lined up.
Messin' with the rear wheel spacers would seemingly work also...

I've tried the Muzzy(RPM) alignment tool, the string method, and the 'ol 8ft flourescent tubes trick. No matter how nice I get the wheels lined up, the inside of the frt sprocket gets worn off. My 2000 was much worse. I've been lately just using the swingarm marks(yeah, I know....)to get er close, then with the frt cover off, using the calibrated eyeball till it rolls as smooth as possible.

Line up the wheels / chassis / swingarm first, then machine or shim the REAR sprocket to align with the C/S. I'd try the laser method today, but I used to hook a string on the C/S and back to the rear (just like doing wheels). When you've got it right, when spinning the wheel the chain should find its way to the center and that should be apparent when looking down on the chain sprocket engagement.
