PC Computer issues...
I know theres alot of computer guys on here so I thought some one might know the answer to this one...
I am trying to ghost my lap top drive. A 12g to a new 30g. I used norton ghost and a usb external drive case to hold the new 30g. It took 24 hours to complete. I then swapped the drives and tried to boot the 30g and I get an error.
On a black screen I get "NTLDR is missing, press any key to restart" and it wont boot.
I copyied the drive 2 times and same thing.
Anyone familiar with ghost and any perameters i neet to be switching?
Thanks

i can only guess that ghost didn't deal correctly with the 12G -> 30G change.
altho... check the bios to see if the HD is even being seen. usually hitting Delete while the initial spash screen is up (the one that gives the logos for the otherboard/BIOS manufacturer) wil get you into the bios. then look for the section that shows you the drives and make sure it is seen. if not, it may be installed incorrectly, like the wrong jumper settings or a cable not plugged in corretly.

Put your original HD back. Do s system State backup. Copy the ntldr, ntdetect.com, boot.ini . and the System state backup to the root of your new HD. You may need to change your view settings to show hidden files and folders, and uncheck hide protected system files. Install your new hd, make sure your system sees it. If it boots great. If any of your applications don't work properly, run the system state restore from the system state backup file. You can also try the Files and Settings transfer wizard in Accesories. Good Luck, you can do it.

I have used Acronis True image with great success. I tried Norton Ghost and it didn't work at all, but I have used the Acronis software several times to clone a small hard drive onto my RAID partitioned hard drives (I run my OS on the RAID drives for a little extra speed)
acronis.com
If you set Acronis up correctly it will clone your drive perfectly and set the new drive up to replace the original and your OS will boot up perfectly the first time.....

Maybe the arcpath in the boot.ini is wrong Make a NT boot floppy and start with it.
Format the floppy diskette you wish to make bootable using your XP machine.
Copy boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntldr to the floppy diskette just formatted. Restart your PC.
If that boots your system, then your arcpath has changed.

ok Ill try that.
I'm trying to chost a fat32 xp drive. I'm wondering if ghost needs a ntfs to properly chost it.
I can convert it to ntfs. but i only have 1.3g left on a10g drive. It mat need more room than that to convert????
I was talking to out computer guy at work and he said ghost it hit or mis on coping drives.
Maybe i'll just try the other software canadamaxxer suggested.
The 10g drive works perfect, why the hell cant ghost just copy the damn thing and be done with it. PITA.

I think at this point, converting to NTFS would just complicate things more.
A) Fdisk your new drive. Do a fresh install of xp on your new drive into an alternate directory say wxp.
B) Put your old drive back in, run the files and settings transfer wizard. I have done this before, and it actually works. The other thing you could try is
1)Step A,
2)Step B and rather than the wizard, do a full ntbackup of everything, saving the backup file to your new HD.
3)Switch to your new HD, and restore the ntbackup file you saved. In the past, I have fully recovered failed servers by replacing the failed hardware, reinstalling the OS, restoring the file system, and restoring the system state.
Good Luck!
