The main question is, is there a better surfacing software package out there other than MC-X? I'm contemplating buying mastercam x to generate models, g code, and tool paths etc. for a 5 axis machine. The CNC control is a centroid m-400.
I'm looking for some info before I spend $17,000 on software and find out that theres better available for surfacing head ports etc.

Hey Y2K if I go with 1mm over size valves on the intakes and exhaust and degree my cams to 106/101 can I get the bike to make peak power at 11600 to 12,000?

Jim.................I would contact Alan Johnson Racing and ask them what they use.. They did all our 500" stuff and in fact do most everyones Cylinder head programs that don't do their own in house.. Which is about 95% of the teams..

Two I can think of Lockheed and Boeing. I don't work for Lockheed...

We use a combination of CATIA solid models translated to MasterCam which generates the multi-axis tool pathes. Our controllers are primarily Fanuc. Don't have any personal experience with Centriod controllers, but the M-400 appears to have been supported since at least v9.

It's a good product that is very easy to use. Our entry level mechanics are productive almost immediately after the first introductory course. It is a bit spendy if you go with a Mill level 3 package. Problem is, it needs Windows and a higher end graphics card.

Can't comment on any other available products. Hope that helps.

Coolness. I have friends that work for Boeing, including one who is a test pilot. I've put several data storage solutions in for various federal programs, some of them 'dark' programs. SeaLaunch, MMA, FCS, UCAV, etc...

Yeah, I probably wouldn't have noticed myself except I had just seen one of those stupid commercials about a minute before I read your post.

Anyways, back to CNC software...

I'd have to enter in the varriables into the software... but off memory when 1 mm oversize valves were in the mix it didnt like alot of extra intake duration and overlap. Velocitys are low and getting lower with 1 mm over intakes so midrange will suffer... its been a while sence I looked at 12r cams and head data in dynomation. I'd check it out for you but im really busy right now with several projects... going nutz.

Thanks for the input guys. Master cam and CNC is new to me and i'm in a steep part of the learning curve right now..... and its only going to get worse before it starts to getbetter.

Back off topic...

We sure do.

Lockheed is also one fine company. A certain member that helped me out with some Arata pipe stuff works for them (Thanks Tom!)

Storage solutions eh? Interesting. Which vendor?

Real good stuff. I really do (actually manage) IT for the BA and get roped into using EMC for the NAS LAN installs in Utah. Been less than satisfied with the services side. Might just be the local services folks. At another company, had good success with the NetApp install.

*nods* Coolness. Nice to run into someone familiar with the gear. It's a pretty competitive market, and the technology changes at an incredible pace.
