Screw 38 Day's WERE HERE

My day starts after getting 4 hours of sleep in 2 days. BFLY calls me when we where suppose to meet at 0300 CST to load and go on 5/12/2002. Bri calls me at 1000 on sat. Night and says he laided down at 1600 and can't sleep. I get 1 1/2 hour of sleep and we load up. As G-D as my witness in no more then 8 1/2 hours we have covered 597 miles and arrived in Alcoa. We both need sleep but after 20 minutes of pretending we decide to pay my old friend foothills parkway a visit. Long and short is as follows. 197 miles later 411, 143, 129, The Tail all done and for good measures Cherohala Skyway DONE route 360 DONE.

Get your Asses down here and let's ride.

P.S. We go have a nice steak dinner and who is standing in the lobby?

Lucy, I'm home!

DAMN BALLISTIC & BFLY!

All along, I haven't had time to get too worked up over this trip. We have been so slammed at work, I really didn't even have time to think about it. I even postponed my arrival from Saturday to Sunday because I knew I wouldn't have time to get ready.

I put the company truck in the shop, accompanied with a typical "Red Elk list" of things I wanted either fixed or checked. After a day, my buddy, the shop manager, calls me and tells me that it looks like this might be the last road trip for the 11 year old truck. If he addressed everything on my list, it would cost over $2000! Almost everything I told them to check, needed to be fixed. Cracked CV boot, coolant leak around the manifold, power steering pump is leaking, transfer case is leaking, rotors were turned all the could be and need replaced, brake lines were fraied, front calipers shot... and on and on. After fixing the brakes, I told him I'd take my chances one more time.

The "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on in my brother's car. Unlike the truck, this light does not reset itself after I turned the car off. That's okay, I thought, it just so happens that the car dealer is directly across the street from my Kawi dealer. I figured that I'd just have them read the code on the car and then I go to the Kawi dealer and slap the new tires on. After a half hour wait, the check the car and say it's some BS emission controls system.

Now, I thought I'd time myself and see how long it would take me to take off, put on and balance two tires. I needed to hurry anyway since I have yet to have gone to work. One should never try to hurry when trying to mount one's own tires. After adding to my collection of wheel scratchs (what do you think the make black sharpies for?), one of the mechanics took pity on me and helped me get the new tires on.

While I balancing the tires, I couldn't find the damn tape weights! The got a new service manager and the mechanics are "testing him" to see how much they can get away with. It seems that one of the "tests" is not putting the damn weights back where they belong! After getting them balanced, I just throw them in the car and head off to work. When I get to work, I realized that I had forgotten to get a new headlight bulb and some other shit. Well it looks like I was going back out there again on Saturday.

Oh yeah, I'm really excited about this trip. I would be leaving in less the 36 hours in a truck that might not make it and then.... I read BFLY's post. Wife packing? Your friggin' wife packing your shit? Let's see, I haven't packed a damn thing and my bike is wheel-less, chain-less, rear sprocket-less and one of my headlights is burned out! Hell, I haven't even check to see if I clean clothes. It's now 29 hours before my "re-scheduled departure.

After running all over God and country on Saturday morning and afternoon, getting everything from biker spandex shorts (don't visualize) to headlight bulbs, it's time to get ready. After putting the tires and bulb on the bike, I forget to use the "anvil" piece when putting the master link on. Smart move. I just pushed the pin right out of the link. Oh the joys of having spare master links. Oh the hell of having to use one because of my stupidity!

It's now 11 hours before "take off" and the bike is ready to go... I think. While admiring my work, the bell on the clothes dryer dings. Yeap, my riding clothes weren't clean. After throwing (seriously) in a couple of sport bags... I'm ready to go. It now time to hit the sack. 5 hours till departure.

Now the "curse of Bart" hits! I can't go to sleep. I tired. I haven't eaten in a day and a half and now I'm looking at the ceiling wonder why the hell I can't co to fuckin' sleep! I figure I'll just sleep in and take out after 10 am. At 6:50 am... I'm awake and figured WTF, I'll just head out.

After making good time for the first 300 miles or so, I see the traffic coming to a DEAD STOP on I-40. Visions of some semi slamming into the back of my trailer and putting the bike in my lap, flash through my mind. Fortunatly, that wasn't the case. What was bad was watching a medflight helicoptor coming down to land on the interstate. The FIRST helicoptor! The second one is just coming into sight. Rumors had it that somebody fell asleep and shot across the median and took out two other cars.

Ducking off on a nearby exit I go to a gas station and get directions around this mess. I'm told by taking some back highway for "20 miles or so", I can go around and get back on I-40. After going on this back highway for a couple miles, there's a sign in the middle of nowhere that says "TO I-40". YEAH BABY!

Turning on to some country road that isn't as wide as my driveway, I was reminded that I was in Tennessee. What is with 18 wheelers being on backroads that the have NO FUCKIN' BUSINESS being on? For 5+ miles, every damn blind 15 mph corner had some semi barreling around it. Both of us testing how far we could go off the road without dropping off in the ditch! I started thinking I'd been better off just staying on the interstate.

Now, I'm just sitting in the hotel wonder why the hell I haven't just gone to bed. Oh yeah... because it's going to rain tomorrow. Wish ya'll were here! I think I'll make some crank phone calls to Ballistic and BFLY's room!

Couldn't have said it better C

Well put C, I am definitely not focused on work. I still have a ton of shit to do, and not much time to do it. I'll be ready though come Thursday. Gonna start packing tonight, and detail the bike as well. I had planned on cleaning my truck up, but with all the rain we're getting it's a waste of time.

Did I mention that WORK SUCKS!!!!!!

Er........ah.........well.........

Did you say your air mattress has a "Fucking" hole in it??? Hell that'd be the one I wanted. LMFAO

Hey dude you are more ready than me. I still got a bunch of crap to do. Usually at this stage I've already got everything packed and ready to throw in the truck. But certain things have fucked my schedule up beyond what I could have imagined. So now I gotta bust ass and hop to it.

Did I mention I was READY ?!?!?

if you fancy a intersting trip, try blueridge parkway (this will be long trip)

go north, hit 89("skyline parkway" towards Galax, VA. head west on 58/221 and go to damascus. 31 decent miles from galax to volney, and 32 NICE miles from volney to damascus. between volney and damascus hwy 58 is not quite as tight as the gap, but it IS relatively un-developed, and follows a small stream/creek/river thing for several several miles....

big grins, i had the brakes inthe truck WAY overheated....

oops...

oh mileages, damascus to alcoa is 160 miles, yahoo has you go on interstates though...

it IS a full day's riding....but the road is nice if you get bored with dg and surrounding.. ;P
