Oil on tire question for Doug/Rob or someone who would have experience with this...

Okay... let's say (hypothetically) that yer friend's bike dumped it's oil and speeeewed it all over their rear 207...


Now... say the oil only sat on the tire for 15 mins or so max cuz the bike was blocks from the dealership and they booted over asap and doused the tire with gallons of contact cleaner...

is the tire still safe to use on the street, or is it toast?

Not that im an expert or anything...but I dont see this as anything a nice long smoky burnout wouldnt cure

the hypothetical dealer replaced the hypothetical tire without question...


sagot suggests that today's sportbike tires are made from porous materials that absorb oil... contact cleaner and other solvents damage the tire compound, and the absorbed oil remaining in the tire would be released under temperature during use...


thoughts anyone?

would you ride a 12 or any other sportbike knowing the tire had been SOAKEd... I mean SOAKED in oil, then cleaned off?

Sounds scary to me at first. Upon reflection I guess I'd put it like this; if your hard up for cash, try it & see how it works. If you got da bux, for peace of mind be safe & replace it.

I've spilled on the tires before, & there was a time when I Armor-All'ed sidewalls (always mistakenly getting some on the edges.) I'd just go easy for awhile, scuff off the crap, check it at the next gas stop. If it's clean, ok to wick it up. I never noticed any ill effects...but this was a while back w/old tires (Phantom's, K81's, & K291's.)

Me, I'm a poor man so I'd clean it & try it. Treat it like a new tire for the first 50-75 miles to be sure. Those first few BIG leans (using all available tread/angle) I certainly would be very tenative & cautious....

I did,but it's a long story. Ever rode down a freeway in the rain and have yer drain plug come out? (Dealers mechanic f%@UP!)

You should see all the oil that goes into the "rubber" (very little actual rubber in a tire anymore) when they mix it up at the tire factory. Lots of wax too. Tires don't soak up oil like a sponge. I'd carefully run it til warm and if it grips, forget it ever happened. Just for the hell of it, I'll try to find an engineer from the tire test lab at work tonight and see what he says.

Tire engineer says scrap it.

Well, here's the scoop. There ain't an engineer in the entire industry that would recommend running that tire. He said that kind of advice, no matter how remotely given, could be suicidal for Goodyear. I guess I see his point. We are all kinda afeared after the Firestone fiasco. Basically, I could tell that he sees no problem but isn't going to say so. All I can say is I'd run it.

well if it happened at the dealer I would expect them to replace it or at the very least split the cost in 1/2 and mount & balance it free. I can't imaging that if you bring it to them the liability alone would be in there best interest to replace it. After all say you went down for what ever reason. What/who would you blame? They know this and they also know the probability of something happening.

Unless someone is going to replace for you at no cost, I'd run it. Seems to me that we encounter oil on the highway, racetrack etc. and the tires survive. I have splilt assorted things on my tires, came out to the shop after working on the bike the nioght before and found a puddle on the hoist and wiped up the mess with no real side effects.
