The SAGA Continues!!
They say that there are two Joys to owning a Boat. When you buy it and when you sell it!
To put that in my language. There are two Joys to racing. The Beginning of the season and the End of the season..
I know I am Old but I never knew I could make so many stupid mistakes in just 1 day! (Not to mention that I was there by myslef and no one to question anything or watch anything or to check anything!)
Mistake #1, I had a Propane torch that I could have stuck in my leathers and taken to the Start line but I did not.
#2, I made "TWO" Runs without Arming the NOS System! Very hard to go fast on a NOS Motor with no NOS!! Lost all of the valuable time to tune the NOS
#3, I turned up the NOS Control pressure but did not ad the Same amount of FUEL Pressure.
#4, I did not take the time to read the Data logger between runs.
#5, GOT IN A HURRY!
I was geared 19 / 43 good for about 215 MPH. On Motor Only the Bike ran between 175 and 180 MPH. Not too bad for an NOS Motor only using part of 5th Gear.. How do you forget to turn on the NOS Arming switch?? I wish I knew. I was so concentrated on the Bottle heater and pressure and the Battery with the Data Logger, Completely slipped (WHat is left of) my mind.
On my third run, OH MY MY!! The Bike was on a real rip! SInce I had lost my time to tune I was going for Broke! Upped the NOS COntrol pressure by 50 PSI, Changed the NOS TImer to 50% start and "NO" Time delay! I hit it at the end of 3rd gear and boy 0 Boy did the tach swing to 12,000. Hit 4th and the same thing! the tach went up like a 2 stroke. Hit 5th and the tach did the same thing and it was at that time I was about time I was at the 3/4 of the mile point I said tro my self "I am finally going to have a SERIOUS Pass over 200 MPH". Why did I say that? Because as I was getting the last word out to myself, the Bike went BURRRRRRR. Like it had richen up from too high a loss of Bottle pressure. I hit the button a few times to make sure but the day was done.
I rode the bike back to the Pits and looked at it. At first everything seemed fine then I saw a few specks of oil on the top of the Airbox. Then I saw Oil where the NOS Line went into the box. I took of the left cover and saw about 1/2 quart of OIL. even the Velocity stacks were full of oil down to the Butterfly.
I cleaned out the box and started the engine. It ran on 3 Cylinders. Later I looked at the Data Logger and here is what I found. Instead of seeing the lean spike go to 13.5 then down to 11, it went to "18 to 1" and dropped down to 12. The #1 thing I saw was the EGT of 1790 degrees in #4 cylinder. SInce Aluminum Melts at about 1250 F and Forged Pistons cannot live much above 1,500 degrees F I am sure a Melted a Piston in #4 cylinder and the Oil in the AIr box is crank case compression caused by the Piston allowing the Pressure in the crank case.
Finally I resolve all of the Problem and have no time to tune it. I had to take it apart at the end of this year for the OD gears and the Case studs but had planned to leave the top end alone! Not now! WHen back together A lot of time flow testing, some Dyno Time and then same street time to tun for the "LOAD" and Varying conditions, write it all down in the Lap top so I will not have to remember anything plus a NOTE on my Bike for a Check list before I make a RUN!.
Can anyone Believe I have now been at this for Three (3) Years?? The thing I also want to mention that most do not take into account is, I have not spent as much time as necessary on the BIKE because of the Medical Malpratice case I have been dealing with for the last "9" Years, My Mother's Death (the Easy Part) her estate (the hard part) that I just finished in July 2006 and started July 2002, then our Trip to South Africa then Peggy's Mom's Death in September.
Anyone remember me saying that I had the Tenacity that a Pit Bull Dreams about? Now you know why, I need to have it!

You have touched on the reason I just cannot seem to be able to get very upset about what happened! "I HAVE figured out what all of the problems were" I just did not have the time left to tune the NOS system. We all have heard the Expression Go for Broke? I went for Broke and I was Successful! I BROKE IT Up until that very run, I could not get the NOW system to spray enough NOS to to blow a Tissue on a glass table! For three Years the NOS has been too rich and no power from the NOS System. To finally run lean and blow it up-- I had to first spray enough NOS to do it, which is what I have finally done!.
So I take the engine out of the Rag and send the gears to New York for the Matching of the OD Gears, Put in the case Studs, get some new CP Pistons RIngs and Wrist Pins (Maybe a Cylinder), clean up the Valve seats and lap the valves in (1/2 MM Intake and 3/4 to 1 MM on the exhaust (Need to do a little more reading to decide the balance of cooling over flow and leakage) and put my Rag back together and break it in while doing a LOT of Flow testing and putting notes in the Lap Top.
I Shall return "Next Year" and do what I have to do!

Bergie,
It was a Great Ride while it lasted!! I am more dissapointed for Everyone that has been going through this with me than myself! After beating my head against the wall for 3 years to finally break through was "Almost" Worth it by itself! Seeing the engine spool up on the dyno making great power and not even stressed (Well not as much as I have been) I just wish that I could have been in this position in September when I could not go because of Peggy's Mom dying! Then I could have done all of the tuning and flow testing and been ready on the first run. I am still enjoying the fact that I do not have to resolve a problem that no one could find or fix! Everything else is Easy!! (Compared to that!)

Well VH I'm still proud of you for showing up. I would have been more easily discouraged. The good news is you have essentially 5 months to get it all smoothed out. Plenty of time to test and tune.

Sorry to hear the bad news Mr. Hill, But it sounds like you might have been close to 200mph right after the 3/4 mark beforethe engine gave. I bet it was putting out some serious HP! If it could have only held on for a few more seconds!

If I had waited to spray 5th and 6th I would have blown after the finish line but I was going for the Record and not over 200 MPH I think from looking at the rpm on the Data Logger and 5th Gear ratio I was at about 202 to 204 I have to re measure the rear tire because all of my charts are for the Stock Diameter tire

Stay after it Vincent, we know you are going to get there!!!
Sorry to hear about your bad luck as it does indeed sound like you were on a good run. But I know this will only fuel your fire even more to Git-R-Done.
Harry's bike wouldn't rev up and was popping, think he barely broke 100mph. I talked to him about it yesterday. He's gonna get some guy to sort it out over the winter while he's in Germany.
I gotta get over there and support you guys one of these days. Might even run just for fun???

202-204 at 3/4 mark should have you where you want to be at the 1 mile spot. Just a few months to get your stuff ready Mr. Hill and before you know it you'll be rolling again.
