how long will carbon fiber canisters last

Just curious as to how long a carbon can will last. I would think that a Titanium can will probably last longer just due to the carbon braking down. Am I off base here?

I've got a carbon Akro with about 4000 miles on it. I've got no problems with it, just curious. Is there any thing that I should be doing to take care of the can...ie preventive maintenance?

Thanks

It's my understanding that UV rays beat up on them pretty bad...Maybe some sunblock?

I've a friend with a carbon Akra. His began to dull after about a year and lots of miles. He keeps it packed good and tight so I don't think it was heat related. He recleared it with spray can clear and it still looks good after quite a bit more miles.

a while

2+ years, 31K+ miles, running it without packing for several thousands of miles (like an idiot), several runs on the dyno... still looks like new. Oh, the Muzzy name plate did come off at about 22K miles.

Maintaining it? I didn't know that there was anything special that needs to be done (my first CF can). I just spray it with the same Plexus or S100 I use on the plastic.

Repacking?

I bought a system used, so I have no directions whatsoever for my CF Muzzy pipe. What do I need to do to repack mine, now that this has been brought up? Do I need to remove the allen screws at both ends, then slide some pieces apart? I figure it has to be easy, there are not many parts to the pipe, I just haven't had the urge to take the pipe off, the bike has been too much fun with it on.

I had my carbon can without fiberglass since i installed it... 2 years and 8000 miles later it became brittle and the pressure of the exhaust caused a small hole on the swingarm side of the can, so I bought a new can... Nothing like the sound of a ZX12 without fiberglass!!!

Try taking out the whole baffle and going for a ride... The Harley guys have no choice but to listen to you!!!

Doing pretty good, THANKS!

Yeah, I decided to just take over payments instead of going through the hassles of refinancing it. Doing it this way allows us to keep the very comprehensive extended warranty. Since my mechanic for the company truck told me that the truck is on it's last leg, I figure that we'll sink enough in it to make it till the end of the year and trade both it and the Talon for a new truck.

Team Speed,
Yes that's HOW you do it, but make sure you get the stuff from us. It is NOT dirt bike fiberglass.
A carbon can without good packing will destroy itself pretty quickly if ridden hard or especially if dynoed.

Don't Worry...

Doug, I wouldn't think of mixing Muzzy products with anything else... I have just started to think about repacking it because I do not know how many miles it has gone with what is in it, and the inner tube is vibrating around when the bike is running, and I dislike rattles that do not belong. This is why I think a repacking is in order.

Well with 4000 miles on my I guess I should start to look into getting some repack material. Anyone know where I can get repack for Akro pipes I figure I'll send Doug (Spencer cycles) an email and see if he can get it since that's where I bought the pipe from.

I cannot realy tell if it's louder than when I bought it or not. IMHO Akro's are a little too quiet anyway. I just want to make sure my investment last!

Since I ride like a pussy, maybe I can make it last till later in the year
