DougMeyer...Redelk...anybody...HELP!!!!

My stainless header/Ti Oval Muzzy has developed a rattle in the muffler (probably 13000 miles on the system)...I stuck my finger inside the exhaust tip and sure enough, I can spin the baffle core 360 degrees (if that's the correct nomenclature for the part).

Is my muffler core broken, or is it spinning and rattling because it needs to be repacked?...or both?

What size allen wrench do I use for those button headed allen screws and are they Loc-Tite'd Red or Blue? I tried to open it up, but I was having a difficult time with the screws so I thought I's ask here first before I mess things up royal

ACK!

Using MY name in the same sentence as Mr. Meyer's (sorry Doug... couldn't resist) on a "Muzzy technical question" is a MAJOR yet undesrvered honor to me. On the other hand, it's probably an insult to Doug! Just kidding... I hope.

Anyway, I guess the first question should be, during those 15K miles, how many times have you repacked your canister? None? Don't worry, it was a "loaded" question. I too went over 15K miles and if I remember correctly, Doug was kind enough to POLITLY point out that it's best to repack your canister about every 5K (Doug?).

When I took mine apart, there was a chunk of packing about half the size of my fist. OOPS! Not to good to be runnin' a CF can with NO packing! Typical Red Elk luck, I didn't damage the canister, but I was getting the same rattling noise you described. Not too hard to realize when there's no packing.

Don't get me to lying about the allen head size. 5mm? 5.5mm? I just grabbed a t-handle that fit... kinda. I think over time, I've stripped the holes on a couple of them. So I couldn't say what size it is for sure. As for what kind of Loc-Tite to use, I haven't used any. I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do either. Still, I haven't lost a bolt yet. It just seems to me that it's not needed.

What's your solution? Take it from someone who has learned the hard way. Replace the packing with ONLY Muzzy packing. Accept NO SUBSTITUTES! Other packing, like for dirtbikes and such, don't last as long and smell like burnt piss. I kid you not! There's a method to their madness at Muzzy and it's just best that you not question it.

Hopefully, Doug will fill you in on the proper allen size and when you should change your packing. REMEMBER... the packing is part of the pipe's PERFORMANCE! Riding without it might sound cool, but it actually hurts your performance.

I know this was of little help, but it should at least get you in the right direction.

Buzzy Muzzy

Thanks, Red...duely noted and awaiting Doug's input and advice...looks like I should be ordering repacking kit material...hmmm....could THIS be why my bike sorta' feels 'flat'?...how much hp/tq does one lose when packing is not optimum?

Doug stated before that you could lose as much as THREE HP by not repacking when needed. Every 5K sounds about right, really depends on how hard you thrash it. Mine needs it about every 3K, since I can tell it gets louder (although it DOES sound good!!) I always use my mutli-set, so I don't know what size it is either?!?

Buzzy Muzzy

...so let me understand...the fact that I can spin the core thru the exhaust tip doesn't mean that its broken?...or does it?...is it supposed to spin at all?...does the packing keep it from spinning or do I have to weld it to whatever its attached to inside?...is this (the spinning/rattling core) some kind of built-in 'wear indicator' telling me that its time to re-pack?...bear in mind that I haven't opened it up (or can't) yet, so I don't know what it looks like inside (which is why I'm asking questions here in the first place )...hello, Doug?

Actually, when I got my packing, a new core came with it. They are not attached.

When the mufflers are assembled, the core is a press fit onto the end caps. When you allow the packing to deteriorate to the point that the core has no protection, the sound waves (technically speaking) beat the shit out of it and it gets loose. The repack kit comes with a new core that will be tight again. If you don't mind a little down time you can send the muffler to us for rebuild/repack ($49.95). It comes back all spiffed up. If you want to do it yourself you can order the kit ($24.95). Everybody should do this off-season without fail, more often if necessary and especially on a carbon. The hex key is a 4mm and make SURE you use high temp silicone on the end caps.

With a pair of pliers slightly bend the ends of the perforated core and then use high temp. silicone where the end caps attach to end caps. Let the silicone setup (1 hour) before running engine. Works fine.
