I understand using the pipe and lube and just as I was writing this I understood the "Angle" at 15 ft lbs. Of course I have the 12 sided Nuts so hopefully that will help in the marking process

Hope APE can help you out with the torque value and stretch for your studds. Their answer might just be that the studds were only ment to take advantage of the extra thread for strokers with thicker base plates.

It seems hard to find answers or information on Head Bolt/Studd strength and stretch.

Those Busa guys sure seem to have a little advantage on this type of aftermarket product with some of those 1/2" Head Bolts that torque to around 85ft/lbs.

Good Luck and keep us up to date Mr. Hill.

Good post mr hill, I have been wanting to do similar and am learing more as I read. I hope this time everything works out for you. A head gasket is so much cheaper then some of the other options. You are using stock gaskets, are they better then the aftermarket copper or other options you may have.

Dr. Gary, I am using a 0.100" thick Spacer so that is not the problem! I am also considering over the winter when I di the Trans and put in the Case studs in doing the 1/2 Inch studs SO I need to call APE which I have NEVER DOne!

Hope Jay will have some answers for you. Over on SH.Org they had done a little testing on different head bolts/studds with regards to to stretch/fatigue and load.

Site is down , but I think it was in the motor section. Busa Head Bolts/studds only.
If I remember correctly they had stock, an older version of APE's studds, and MH 1/2".
MH 1/2" Bolts came out on top, but since that APE had new better quality studds come out and also new 1/2" studds, plus ARP came out with some beauties too. On Dragbike.com they had some titanium ones that were never tested. The basic concept of the thread was that once the bolt/studd were torqued properly then less stretch was better so the head would not lift. It would be real interesting to go back through and re-test for stretch, and deformation against specific load spikes.

I have a set of case studs made by ARP and called APE and the guy was at lunch. Then I called back and the line was busy!

Finally! He said that he would find the box for the stretch but the torque MIN was 52 and max was 62 and he suggested I "START" at 55 SO that is what I will use!
